Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A home's red door has many meanings in different cultures. It is a symbol of good luck for the Chinese, a way to ward off evil sprits in Ireland and the American "Underground Railroad" used it a sign of a safe house. What is the meaning of a red door in the Southern states?

Answer: Welcome

The origin of the American South's red door stems from colonial days when a traveler on a horse and buggy would know that as night approached, he or she could look for a red door, which was a sign that that house had an extra bed. Often the home's owner would let the traveler stay free of charge.

3. Over 2 million tourists ride the Staten Island Ferry every year. What tourist attraction did the New York City Council approve to be built on the promenade next to the ferry?

Answer: A Ferris wheel larger than the London Eye

At 600 feet,it would be larger than either the 541 foot Singapore wheel or the 443 foot London Eye. A full rotation of the wheel would take nearly an hour and a half. With over two million tourists visiting Staten Island via ferry every year, the wheel will be the first thing visitors see as the boats dock.

The church is no longer operational, but still stands as a museum. Long Branch, formerly named Elberon, is where it is located. Elberon was often the location of presidential vacations. After he was shot, President Garfield was brought here in the hope that the fresh air would be beneficial for him. It didn't work, and Garfield died two weeks later.

6. In which mid-Atlantic state, whose largest city is located on two rivers, is the oldest operating rowing club in the United States?

Answer: Pennsylvania

Located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the oldest operating rowing club in the United States is the Bachelor's Barge Club, which is a part of Philadelphia's Boat House Row. The Bachelor's Barge boathouse was started in the early 1800s by a group of firefighters who were stationed by the Schuylkill River.

The twelve boathouses that compromise Boathouse Row are outlined by lights of different colors depending on the season of the year or a particular holiday. The Bachelors Barge as a part of Boathouse Row is a tourist attraction best seen at night.

At one end of this "Row",it is framed by the Philadelphia Art Museum. To drive along Kelly Drive which follows the Schuylkill River and enter Philadelphia by scenic Boathouse Row and the Philadelphia Museum of Art is a lovely approach to the "Quaker City." As a native Philadelphian, I love taking this route into the city. (Irishrosy)
