Answer: 914

In the year 914, when Warwick was threatened by Danish invaders, Ethelfleda, the daughter of Alfred the Great ordered the building of a "burgh", or an earthen rampart to protect the small hilltop town. The castle has been added to and developed for hundreds of years.

Answer: Avon

The River Avon was very important for the castle's survival. It was used for many years to supply power to the Mill and Engine House. Also in the river is River Island, which in the 1890s was inhabited by Japanese deer, Chinese geese, an ant bear, an emu, assorted racoons, and an elephant! These exotic animals were collected by the Countess of Warwick.
4. For about 600 years, the Mill and Engine House were used to grind grain to flour.

Guy's Tower, built in the 14th century, was important to the castle's defense. It is 12-sided and 39 meters high. The first four stories consist of central stone-vaulted chamber with two small side rooms. One was a gardrobe, or a toilet, and the other was probably a bedchamber.
