Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Its length includes the first tunnel dug using the Greathead Shield method

Answer: Northern Line

The City & South London Railway was the first of London's underground railways to be dug using the deep-tube tunneling method perfected by James Henry Greathead, and the first to be powered by electricity.
2. Only one station along its length does not interchange with either a mainline railway or another tube line

Answer: Victoria Line

Pimlico station on the Victoria Line has no interchange with another railway. Of the others, seven interchange solely with mainline railways, four solely with other tube lines, and four with both.
3. Contains the longest single journey on the entire Underground system

Answer: Central Line

The distance between Epping and West Ruislip, the longest journey possible without having to change trains, is just over 34 miles (55km).
4. The only line that has NO physical track connection to any other tube or mainline railway line

Answer: Waterloo & City Line

Until 1992, Waterloo & City trains were brought to the surface using a special lift connecting to sidings to the north of Waterloo station. This ceased to be used following the construction of Waterloo International terminal, after which W&C trains were removed by road-mounted crane.
5. Cut back from its original northern terminus in 1982, and then extended to its current terminus in 1984

Answer: Bakerloo Line

Prior to 1982, Bakerloo line trains terminated at Watford Junction station, before being cut back to terminate at Stonebridge Park. Two years later they were extended to the present terminus at Harrow & Wealdstone.
6. Included the last section of the Underground to use steam locomotives

Answer: Metropolitan Line

Up to 1961, Metropolitan line trains were hauled by electric locomotive as far as Rickmansworth, where a steam locomotive subsequently took over. After 1961, the Metropolitan was electrified as far as Amersham, and steam was no longer used.
7. The only London Underground line to pass over the River Thames on a bridge rather than under it through a tunnel

Answer: District Line

The District line crosses the River Thames on two different bridges - Fulham Railway Bridge between Putney Bridge and East Putney (Wimbledon branch) and Kew Railway Bridge between Gunnersbury and Kew Gardens (Richmond branch).
8. The first line to feature platform-edge doors on its station platforms

Answer: Jubilee Line

The Jubilee line extension, opened in 1999 between Westminster and Stratford, was the first part of the Underground network to have platform edge doors installed on its platforms for safety. These are located at all of the stations built underground.
9. Until 1988, considered to be part of another Tube line

Answer: Hammersmith & City line

In 1988, the route from Hammersmith to Barking, which had been considered part of the Metropolitan line, was separated and renamed as the Hammersmith & City line, receiving the colour pink on the Underground map.
10. The only line to feature a uni-directional loop with stations on it

Answer: Piccadilly Line

The Heathrow extension of the Piccadilly line originally opened in 1977 to serve Terminals 1, 2 and 3. In 1984, the clockwise uni-directional loop opened to coincide with the opening of Heathrow Terminal 4.
