1. What company manufactures the Zamboni? The Zamboni (and its family) have been honored by induction into several Halls of Fame: Ice Skating Institute of America Hall of Fame; the National Hockey League Hall of Fame, and the National Inventors Hall of Fame in Akron, Ohio.

Answer: Frank J. Zamboni Company

The company has been privately owned for four generations of Zambonis. Frank Zamboni, Sr. emigrated from Italy to Utah. Frank Junior was born in Utah but grew up on a farm in Pocatello, Idaho. At the age of 20 he and his younger brother moved to California to work in the automobile repair shop owned by a third brother.

When Frank married, he and his wife had two daughters and a son, Richard.

Frank Zamboni was commissioned by Monsanto to solve problems relating to artificial turf. The original AstroZamboni removed water from synthetic turf athletic fields after rainstorms (since the rain did not percolate through the carpeting as it might through the ground.) A second innovation helped to remove paint on the Astroturf after lines had been painted on a field.

Frank Zamboni was a tinkerer and an inventor. He obtained 15 patents over his career. The last one was awarded when he was 82 years old. Most of them were improvements on the design and performance of the Zamboni.

Resurfice is owned and operated by the Schlupp family. It was begun in 1967 in Elmira, Ontario by welder Andrew Schlupp whose son Don is also in the business. The Schlupp machine is called the "Olympia". The company has made propane powered and electric ice resurfacers. Their machines are used in the National Hockey League and were contracted for the 2010 Olympic Games.

According to the Zamboni company website, two electric-powered Zambonis were used at the Squaw Valley Winter Olympics in 1959. The electric powered Zamboni didn't enter into production mode until 1978.

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, a self-proclaimed "Hockey Mom", was a US vice presidential candidate in 2008. The remark came during and October 2008 interview with People Magazine. People who saw the interview disagreed as to whether it was a serious remark or intended as a joke.

Answer: 9 miles per hour

The company drives the vehicles on city streets on the way to testing them on the nearby Iceland skating rink. The Iceland Rink was originally opened by the Zamboni family in 1940.

On Cheers, Carla's husband Eddie LeBec was a hockey player who died after being run over by a Zamboni. The episode was called "Death Takes a Holiday on Ice." Murder She Wrote starred Angela Lansbury as a small town New England crime solver. Columbo starred Peter Falk as a detective in a rumpled raincoat who always had "one more question" to ask suspects.

The Gear Daddies broke up officially in 1992 but has done some concerts back together. Their song is often played at ice rinks while the rink is being resurfaced
