Subject: Editor's Choice Nominations

Posted by: Terry
Date: Jul 09 09

Have you stumbled upon a quiz that was SO GOOD that you were amazed it wasn't an Editor's Choice?

Feel free to post suggestions of quizzes that you believe are uniquely creative, imaginative, interesting, fantastic and deserving of Editor's Choice designation.

There is NO guarantee that ANY of the quizzes posted here will receive such a designation, but we will periodically check some of these nominations out to make sure that nothing truly special slipped through the cracks.

Note that an Editor's Choice is exceptionally difficult to earn one of these designations, and that we have many thousands of well crafted, well researched quizzes that will never earn this designation.

Please post only those very few quizzes that are truly exceptional.

To try to reduce conflicts of interest and a massive list of quizzes from friends, please do NOT post quizzes from team members or people on your friends list.

I was feeling like a little displacement therapy so I went through the top 5 quizzes in each category to see how many Editors' Choices they contained. The answer was a surprisingly high number!

Prize for highest ranked EC went to Lady Catriona's "It Wasn't Me!". Prize for "Category editors most in touch with their public" went to Hobbies with 3 out of the top 5 having received thumbs.

Here's the list:
Afrikaans to Zulu (World - Site ranked 79)
Loyal Legends In the AFL (Sports - Site ranked 52)
Quirky Quantum and Nuclear Physics (Sci/Tech - Site ranked 44)
They Remember Me For WHAT? (People - Site ranked 265)
Nikki Giovanni (People - Site ranked 271)
Dear Athena... (Humanities - Site ranked 185)
Crochet Tiger, Knit A Dragon (Hobbies - Site ranked 159)
Behold, the Pomegranate (Hobbies - Site ranked 350)
The Death of Vegemite Worms (Hobbies - Site ranked 439)
Vampires of the Enlightenment (History - Site ranked 32)
Underwear Over the Years (History - Site ranked 137)
Quiz of the Nile (Geography - Site ranked 837)
It Wasn't Me (General - Site ranked 13)

Many of those are the same authors. :P
Stu, Pu2, and Ing should be proud- as should the rest. :)

I would like to nominate Kyleisalive's newest quiz, "Better Late Then Never". It is very well written.

I'd like to nominate the below quiz by iCaramba. It's a combination of excellent craftsmanship and an unusual approach to an overdone topic - the Beatles.

I'd like to nominate "Christmas day- the aussie Way"
As an Aussie I thought it was fun. An eclectic mix of history, culture, songs, stories and recipes. Sounds like a woman's magazine!

I've just played Love, Literally by Emmaf2008, I'm very surprised it doesn't already have the thumbs up.

I have never advertised a quiz before (and don't agree with people doing that), but the quiz that I just placed online is in the top five of all the quizzes that I've ever come across as an editor. Congrats to the author, and great job with their research and writing ability!

I second supersal1's nomination of EmmaF2008's "Love, Literally". Emma's poetry had me in stitches. Emma kept the momentum going for all 10 questions, and that is not an easy accomplishment. This is a wonderful quiz.

Thanks Nightmare :) I really don't know what to say! I just hope that people have as much fun with it as I had in writing it.

Good one Jonno, it had some of that old time FT writing flavor to it.

Just played glendathecat's punny quiz! It was great! How come it doesn't have a thumb yet?

I second Leith's nomination. I was surprised also that it didn't have a thumb.

I think that the Editors Choice Award is unfair and should be eliminated. Many deserving quizzes are not given the Award, and many undeserving quizzes are.

Who decides who gets the Award and what criteria do they use?

It seems to be of an arbitrary nature.

I can't see a problem with it. FT players get their say when they rank quizzes, so there are two awards really, the EC from the Eds and the Sunglasses from the players. Referencing another thread, a bit like The Oscars and the People's Choice awards!

It *is* arbitrary, or at least subjective.. Editors choose the quizzes they like best. There aren't really any set in stone criteria. It's the same way critics pick their favourite movies.. you might think their favourite is terrible.

I think as well as being subjective there are some criteria.
I really appreciate the support here for my "Fruit Flies Like A Banana" quiz but I can see that, from a quiz point of view, it's too easy to be really challenging. I'm sure that a quiz that's obviously too easy or tough is unlikely to get an EC.

Also, I'm sure that novelty plays a part. IMHO, a good quiz with a novel approach in virgin territory is more likely to get a thumb than a great quiz that happens to be the millionth quiz submitted on the Simpsons.

Yes, there are loose criteria, such as an appropriate level of challenging-ness, originality, good writing, etc. but it's not like there's strict criteria like "It must get 10 Excellent ratings within an hour of being online" or anything very specific like that.

I do think that there have been a quite a few more ECs given out in the last, I don't know, 6-8 months or so? Maybe that's a reflection of us authors turning out more different and original quizzes, maybe due to all our challenges and whatnot. I don't think it's really that any criteria, or editors' preferences, became less strict, but I do kind of suspect that someone behind the scenes said "ok, let's start giving out a few more of these".
