There are a lot of good quizzes on this site beyond the scope of what the editors and authors can 'recognize' in their own ways. The ECs, as GG put, are kind of like the employee picks at your local bookstore or video rental picked by the people who place them online. By no means do they need to appeal to a broad audience, but we hope they reflect a small portion of what this site has to offer. As we've seen, editors and players may have different opinions, but that's another part of what makes the site so good. ;) Reply #121. Mar 08 10, 11:25 AM |

"I do think that there have been a quite a few more ECs given out in the last, I don't know, 6-8 months or so? Maybe that's a reflection of us authors turning out more different and original quizzes, maybe due to all our challenges and whatnot. I don't think it's really that any criteria, or editors' preferences, became less strict, but I do kind of suspect that someone behind the scenes said "ok, let's start giving out a few more of these"." The Challenges and the Author's Lounge are a major factor in this. ;) Reply #122. Mar 08 10, 11:27 AM |

I've always viewed the thumb as the equivalent of an A+ gold star, and what is says is that you have submitted to that particular editor on that particular day a quiz that is original, intelligent, well written and just an all round joy. I would hate to see it discontinued, mainly because I havn't got one yet! I continue to live in hope and strive to reach that pitch of perfection just once, and if I ever do (and I may not) then my shrieks of joy will be heard all over this site. Reply #123. If a quiz was required to be played so many times; and, receive so many Excellent ranks to be awarded an Editor's Choice; that would be fair. My understanding of FT is that it is committed to being fair in everything it does. So, keep the Big Thumb award; but change how its determined. Reply #125. Mar 08 10, 11:02 PM |

Re: "If a quiz was required to be played so many times; and, receive so many Excellent ranks to be awarded an Editor's Choice; that would be fair." Couldn't you just create several accounts or have a large group of players simply play your quiz and rank it excellent over and over? That and it wouldn't be able to be called 'Editor's Choice'. ;) Reply #126. Mar 08 10, 11:07 PM |

Also, re: "If a quiz was required to be played so many times; and, receive so many Excellent ranks to be awarded an Editor's Choice; that would be fair." That pretty much describes the Sunglass awards. Reply #127. Mar 09 10, 12:26 AM |

The Editior's choice in my opinion is fine as it is. Keep it this way. Reply #128. Mar 09 10, 2:28 AM |

I spend too much time working with teenagers to have much time for "fair" arguments. It is what it is - an editor says "Yes, that works for me" and you get a thumb. They see so much that you have to trust that there really is something special about the quiz that gets the response. There may be something special about lots of other quizzes, too - they can't all be winners. I don't always see it myself, but then again I don't see all those quizzes that never make it online! The description for the editor's choice, somewhere online, I don't know where, says it is an award when it strikes an editor, and they think "wow, one in a million". It might be the best quiz ever written, but if it does not grab the editor, it does not get the award. On a magazine, you might see a featured article, as an editor's choice, they really enjoyed the article, and that is the one they pick; it might not be the best article in the paper, but it got the recognition. :-) It is simply what strikes the editor's fancy. :-) Reply #130. Even though I never expect to get an Editor's Choice award, I nearly always strive to get one (some of my quizzes are ordinary, just to keep my count ticking over). I think if not anything else, it serves as a good motivator, the thumb next to your quiz on lists and the striking yellow strap on your quiz's introduction page is always nice. I had been writing quizzes for 4.5 years before I got my first EC - your patience, persistence and consistency will be rewarded. :) Reply #131. Mar 09 10, 10:28 AM |

Amen, Jonno. :-) Though, for me, only 3 years. It took 2 1/2 years to get the EC, and it was on a quiz I had written nearly a year before. :-) Haha. So you never know. ;-) Reply #132. Mar 09 10, 10:45 AM |

I'm still hanging out for one too...it would be nice to get one before the year ends, but it's all down to me and my ability to write the perfect quiz. Reply #135. Mar 10 10, 2:56 AM |

Actually, my one EC was a somewhat 'throwaway' quiz that I wrote on impulse one afternoon. I still don't think it's one of my best, and it's certainly not the most popular. But I'm not arguing! Reply #136. Mar 10 10, 3:25 AM |

My one and only EC quiz is, I think, one of my best, mainly because it's rather more original than most of my quizzes. I was thrilled to get the thumb and don't have a problem with the subjective nature of the award. Reply #137. Mar 10 10, 8:21 AM |

As the title says, it's an editors choice award, not a people's choice award. If an editor thinks the quiz is great, then they'll award it a thumb. But everything is subjective and one person's idea of a great quiz may not be someone elses. And I think that after looking at new quizzes day in day out, I'm sure the editors would get a bit tired of the same old stuff all the time. That's why when something different comes along, it sparks their interest and results in a thumb. Reply #138. Mar 10 10, 4:07 PM |
