Baseball Teams Trivia Questions

1. The New York Yankees adopted their team name in 1913. What was their name prior to this?

From Quiz
Yankees vs. Mets

Answer: New York Highlanders

The franchise that would become the New York Yankees began as the second incarnation of the Baltimore Orioles, who played their first season in 1901 for the newly created American League. The reason the team was started in Baltimore is because the New York Giants of the National League did not want to compete with another team in New York City. However, in 1903, an agreement between the two leagues was reached and the 1901 Orioles moved to Manhattan, New York. The team's name was then changed to the New York Highlanders. The name Highlanders was chosen due to the higher elevation in the area where their former stadium, Hilltop Park, was located. The media at the time often referred to the Highlanders as "Yanks" or "Yankees" and the team officially changed its name to the New York Yankees in 1913.

2. This was the only MLB team that wears black uniform with white texting and logo while at some other times, vice versa. Which team had only black and white as their primary colors?

From Quiz MLB Team Colors

Answer: Chicago White Sox

The Chicago White Sox went through several team color changes, such as navy blue and white until the 1940s, and red, blue and white as primary colors in the latter half of 1970s and the 1980s. As a side note, in 1960 the White Sox became the first team in all of American major sports to show player's last names on the jerseys.

3. This team changed their name from the Highlanders to which team in 1913?

From Quiz Screams 'N Teams

Answer: Yankees

The New York Highlanders became the most famous franchise in history when they changed their name to the Yankees in 1913. Changing from Hilltop Grounds in late 1912, the new Yankee team played at Polo Grounds V under the new management of Frank Chance. The Highlanders finished in last place in the American League in 1912 with a 50-102 record, then improved a little under Frank Chance in 1913 with a seventh place finish and a 57-94 record. The team would slowly improve and finally with the acquisition of the great Babe Ruth would win the AL pennant in 1921 but lost in the World Series to the New York Giants. The 1922 season would see the same result, the AL pennant but a loss to the Giants in the big top again. The Yankees would change things in 1923 by defeating the Giants in the World Series four games to two which began to rewrite baseball history.

4. The American League began all their endeavors in 1901. Which team won the first American League pennant?

From Quiz Baseball Team Potpourri

Answer: Chicago White Sox

None of the other teams existed in the American League in 1901. The White Sox were led by manager Clark Griffith. Amazingly, the team did not have a player that led the league in anything. They took the AL pennant by four games over the Boston Americans. Chicago would have to wait until 1906 to appear in their first World Series in a four games to two win over the crosstown Cubs.

5. Which team in the 1990s had the best season in the decade?

From Quiz Baseball Teams Real Challenge

Answer: New York Yankees

Although going to five World Series in the 1990s, the Braves' best season record was 106-56 in 1998. The Yankees owned the 1998 season by going 114-48 which earned them a trip to the World Series. They won it all four games to none against the Padres. The Cardinals and Blue Jays didn't reach the century mark in wins in the 1990s.

6. The National League's Philadelphia Phillies franchise began it all in 1883. Which team name did they use in their inaugural season?

From Quiz A Stream of Teams

Answer: Quakers

The franchise was the Quakers from 1883-1889. The Phillies name came in 1890 and still did not win a National League crown until 1915. Unfortunately, they lost that World Series to the Boston Red Sox four games to one. Their first World Series title would not be until 1980 when they defeated the Kansas City Royals four games to two.

7. In which year did the Major League Baseball All-Star Game first surpass 70,000 in attendance?

From Quiz Baseball Attendance

Answer: 1981

This All-Star game had 3 lead changes and had 16 future Hall of Famers on the rosters.

8. This American League team went to the first-ever World Series in 1903, then changed their name to the Red Sox in 1908. Which team was this?

From Quiz MLB Teams

Answer: Americans

The Boston Americans met the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1903, in a five games to three win over the Pirates in the World Series. The Americans also won the 1904 American League pennant, but there was no World Series held in that season. As the Red Sox, they won their first World Series in 1912 against the New York Giants.

9. The Most Valuable Player Award (MVP) began in 1911. Who was the first Chicago player to win this award?

From Quiz Chicago's Bragging Rights

Answer: Frank Schulte

Schulte won the very first NL MVP Award in 1911 for the Cubs. He won the award over the Giants' Christy Mathewson and the Phillies' Pete Alexander. Frank hit 21 home runs (a large amount in a season back then), had 107 RBIs, and batted .300 in the season. Ty Cobb won the first AL MVP in 1911 by batting .420, 127 RBIs, and hitting only eight home runs. The others listed never played for any Chicago team.

10. Which year did the New York Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers move to California?

From Quiz The Moving Van is Here!

Answer: 1958

The Giants franchise had been in New York since 1883 initially, with their name of New York Gothams. The Dodger franchise began as the Brooklyn Atlantics in 1884. They were also unofficially called the Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers.

11. A record was set in the National League by the Cleveland Spiders in 1899 for losing 134 games in a season. Which American League team set their league record when they lost 119 games in 2003?

From Quiz A Team Did That?

Answer: Tigers

The Tigers went a dismal 43-119 under the management of Alan Trammell. Pitcher Mike Maroth "led" the team with nine wins, but also lost 20 in the process. The Tigers kept Trammell on for two more seasons before he was canned. Jim Leyland took over the team in 2006 and took the Tigers to the World Series in his first season, but lost to the Cardinals in the big one.

12. Which California Major League team played their first home game in the state in 1961?

From Quiz California Prowess

Answer: Angels

The Angels began their endeavors under the management of Bill Rigney in 1961. They finished eighth of ten teams with a 70-91 record. They initially played their home games at the old Wrigley Field in Los Angeles, which first opened in 1925. From 1962-1965, they shared Dodger Stadium with the National League club. In 1966, they moved into their own Anaheim Stadium.

13. Which New York franchise was the first to change their team name three times?

From Quiz New York Prowess

Answer: Dodgers

The Giants franchise began it all in 1883 as the New York Gothams. 1885 saw them change to the New York Giants until 1958, when they moved to San Francisco. The Yankees began it all in 1901 as the Baltimore Orioles, then became the New York Highlanders in 1903. 1913 saw them bring in the Yankee name. The Mets began their endeavors in 1962 as the Mets. The Dodger franchise had already changed their name six times before the end of the 19th Century. Their names included the Brooklyn Atlantics, Grays, Grooms, Bridegrooms, and Superbas.

14. When Major League Baseball began it all in 1901 with the American and National League, how many teams were there in each separate league?

From Quiz 100 Years of Major Leagues

Answer: 8

In 1899, the National League had 12 teams, and trimmed it down to eight in 1900 to prepare for the merger in 1901. The White Sox won the very first American League pennant in 1901, and the Pirates took the honors for the National League.

15. Which team was the very first to play a home game in California?

From Quiz California Major League Teams

Answer: San Francisco Giants

The Giants hosted the Dodgers in San Francisco on opening day April 15, 1958. The Dodgers were embarrassed with the 8-0 loss. The Giants' Ruben Gomez took the win while Don Drysdale took the loss. The first California strikeout was the first batter of the game, when Dodger Gino Cimoli went down. Giant shortstop Daryl Spencer hit the first California Major League home run. It came in the fourth inning off Drysdale. By season's end, the Giants (80-74) finished in third place behind the NL pennant-winning Milwaukee Braves, and the Dodgers finished in seventh place with their 71-83 record. There were only eight National League teams in 1958.

16. Worn for one game during the 1976 season, blue cap with part of my team's nickname, white old-style shirt with blue collar and lettering, white and blue tube socks without stirrups, and blue baseball "pants." What team did I represent?

From Quiz MLB Team Uniforms

Answer: Chicago White Sox

The White Sox wore shorts during game one of a doubleheader against the Royals on August 8, 1976, causing Royal first baseman John Mayberry to quip, "You guys are the sweetest team we've seen yet". They went on to win the game, but ditched the embarrassing duds for the 2nd game, never to wear them again.

17. The first Major League team to be based in the Big Apple were a National League club of 1876. What was their name?

From Quiz Baseball New York Style

Answer: New York Mutuals

The Mutuals were founded in 1858 and were members of various leagues before joining the fledgling National league in 1876. Based at the Union Grounds in Brooklyn, they failed to fulfill all of their fixtures, were expelled from the league, and folded.

18. The Atlanta Braves franchise was one of the inaugural members of the new National League in 1876. What was their team name?

From Quiz Lions, Tigers, and What?

Answer: Red Caps

The Boston Red Caps by name were in the NL from 1876-1882, winning two National League pennants. In 1883, the franchise found a name change to Beaneaters, and as odd as the name was, the team won another NL pennant in that season. They would win another five NL pennants before the franchise renamed themselves to the Doves in 1907. After a couple more name changes, the franchise became the Boston Braves in 1912, then won their first World Series in 1914 against the Philadelphia Athletics. The franchise moved to Milwaukee in 1953, winning one World Series in 1957, then moving again to Atlanta in 1966.

19. The Detroit Tigers franchise began in 1901 with the new American League, and Ty Cobb virtually set every career batting record for the Tigers. In their first 50 seasons, who led the team with the most career home runs?

From Quiz Baseball Franchises: First 50 Seasons

Answer: Hank Greenberg
