Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Chicken Little was eggstatic to learn that guinea pigs are violently allergic to which of the following items?

Answer: Egg whites

The fact that guinea pigs are allergic to egg whites has found a practical application in the testing of pharmaceutical products. John Vane developed the cascade super fusion bioassay technique (circa late 1950s). Specifically, two sections of animal tissue are placed upstream from each other in neutral Krebs solution.

The first tissue section is treated with a substance that induces anaphylactic shock and causes the subsequent release of of a hormonal compound that travels via the flowing Krebs solution to the second piece of tissue. If the second piece of tissue reacts by changing (e.g., flexing, twitching) it indicates that there has been a reaction to the hormonal secretion of the first tissue section. If the substance causing the change can be determined an important step has been achieved in discovering the precise chemical reaction of the drug being tested. Due to guinea pigs' violent allergic reaction (i.e., anaphylactic shock followed by hormonal secretion) to egg whites their lung tissue has often been used as the first tissue section in research utilizing the cascade super fusion bioassay technique.

2. Like birds, crocodiles swallow stones and rocks on purpose. One of these reasons is to use the stones as ballast. What is the other reason?

Answer: To help digest food

Crocodiles don't get any nutrition from the stones, and it doesn't help them attract mates. They do use stones to grind up food. These stones act as our teeth do when we are chewing. Since crocodiles can't use their tongues, it is not easy to chew their food. So they rely on stones to grind up the food for them.

4. This part of an elephant can be up to eight feet long and contain about forty thousand muscles. What body part is this?

Answer: Trunk

Elephant trunks are incredibly versatile. They are capable of lifting up to 770 lbs (350 kgs)! They are also capable of more delicate tasks and can crack a peanut shell without breaking the peanut inside. Trunks are also used for breathing, touching, making noise and smelling. An elephants sense of smell is up to four times as sensitive as a bloodhound.

The trunk is also used to pick up water and an Asian elephant can hold up to 8.5 litres of water in its trunk. At the end of the trunk of African elephants are two finger-like extensions that are used to pick up food.

In the Asian elephant there is only one of these finger-like extensions that is used more to wrap a food object than to grasp it. Trunks are so vital to elephants that they are very unlikely to survive without it.

Some elephants have been known to survive with shorter trunks but that is rare. What a marvel the trunk is!
