Rudolph Valentino was a matinee idol, star of such silent films as "The Sheik", "Blood And Sand", and "The Eagle". Known as the "Latin Lover", he died of peritonitis at the early age of 31, creating hysteria among his many female admirers.

He had previously been forced to flee his native Germany for the United Kingdom in 1933 when the Nazis rose to power. His (then) 18-year-old daughter Irene also fled to the UK, where she met and eventually married the Welshman Bryn Newton-John. They then moved to Australia when Olivia was 6.

According to Revel Barker's biography of Liberace ("Crying All the Way to the Bank"), during the 1950s to 1970s, when Liberace was at the height of his popularity, he was the world's highest paid entertainer - earning more than his contemporaries like Elvis Presley and the Beatles. No wonder he wasn't worried about bad reviews!
