Chicago born Charmian Farnon was only 22 when her mother persuaded her to audition for the part of Liesl, beating the likes of Mia Farrow and Patty Duke to win her first major role in film. Robert Wise, who directed the film, asked her to change her name to something shorter and the name Carr was chosen.

She got married in 1967 and gave up acting after she had two daughters. She started a design business called Charmian Carr Designs and went on to decorate rooms for people such as Michael Jackson. Her books "Forever Liesl" (2000) and "Letters to Liesl" (2001) were part autobiography and part story of her experiences making "The Sound of Music". Charmian still makes the occasional television appearance and can be seen at various sing-along events.

At the time of auditioning for the part of Louisa von Trapp, Heather Menzies believed the film was "Some movie being filmed in Australia, starring Julie Harris". Years later, the beautiful actress would try and shake off the image of the young Louisa by appearing nude in the magazine, "Playboy", and playing skimpily clad Jessica in the 1977-1978 television series, "Logan's Run".

She married Robert Urich in 1975 and they adopted three children together. Urich was a very handsome actor from the 1970s until his death to cancer in 2002, appearing in popular television series "S.W.A.T.", "The Love Boat" and "The Lazarus Man". Since his death, Heather Menzies has worked tirelessly for the Robert Urich Foundation for Cancer Research and Patient Care. She still maintains contact with her other siblings from "The Sound of Music".

Nicholas Hammond auditioned for the part of the eldest son, Friedrich von Trapp, when he was 14 years old, although he could not sing or dance. He carried on acting after the film was released, starring in the television series "Gunsmoke", "Falcon Crest" and "Dallas".

It was when he visited Australia during the 1980s that he liked the country so much that he took up citizenship. Still maintaining a career in acting, he starred in popular Australian television shows including "The Flying Doctors", "Skippy" and more recently as Agent Smith in the comedy, "The Jesters". He has gone on to become an award winning director and screenwriter.

Although it appeared so in the film, Duane Chase did not in fact sing the high notes in "So Long Farewell" as this was above his singing range. Instead, this was sung by Charmian Carr's sister, Darleen Carr. Chase was a mischievous 13 year old when he played the part of Kurt, often misbehaving behind the camera as well as in front.

He went on to star in one more film, the 1966 Disney film, "Follow Me Boys". By this time, he had saved up all his earnings so that he could give up acting to study Geology, obtaining his Masters degree from the University of Alabama. This led him to work as a geologist for oil and mining companies, designing their computer software programmes. He married a nurse in 1987 and still keeps in touch with the cast of "The Sound of Music" by meeting up at anniversary events.

Twelve year old Angela Cartwright was an accomplished child actress, appearing in many television programmes including "Lost in Space" from 1965 to 1968 and "My Three Sons" from 1965 to 1969. "Lost in Space" was a science fiction series which told of the Robinson family, space ship pilot, Dr. Zachary Smith, and their robot, who were all thrown off course by a meteor shower and crash landed on an alien planet.

Cartwright married in 1976 and had two children. She has been an artist and photographer for the last forty years, owning an art gallery and gift shop in California called Rubber Boots. She revisited Salzburg in Austria with her "Sound of Music" siblings where she took photographs and recreated these images by hand painting.

Young Debbie Turner was at the age when she was losing her front teeth and this happened during filming. She was given false teeth to wear to aid continuation and editing of the film. After "The Sound of Music", she dabbled in modelling and appeared in commercials, but finally gave up her acting career in 1979.

She took up work as a mortgage banker for a very short while but then became a professional skier in Utah, becoming the west coast ski racing champion. It was through skiing that she met her aircraft engineer husband and they got married in 1980, raising four daughters together. In 1989, she set up her own floral design company and named it Debbie Turner Originals.

Kym Karath carried on acting, after "The Sound of Music", in television roles including "Family Affair" from 1966 to 1971. She also took guest parts in "Lassie" (1966), "The Brady Bunch" (1972) and "The Waltons"(1973).

She moved to Paris to study at the Art History School of the Louvre, with some fill-in modelling work in her spare time. She met her future husband in Paris and they married in 1985. Their son was born in 1991 and they chose actress Heather Menzies, who played Louisa in "The Sound of Music", to be his godmother.

Julie Andrews won an Academy Award for Best Actress in the 1964 film "Mary Poppins". She was also nominated for the same award a year later in her role as Maria in "The Sound of Music", losing out to Julie Christie, who starred in the film "Darling"

Mother to five children and grand-mother to at least eight grand-children, she still maintained a full acting career even after losing her singing voice after an operation. His acting career took off, especially his stage work for the Canadian Repertory Theatre. He became a household name when the 1965 film "The Sound of Music" appeared on screens.

He has been married three times and has one daughter, also an actress. He had to wait until he was 82 years old until he won his first Academy Award, for Best Supporting Actor in the film "Beginners". Plummer played a gay man and the film told of his relationship with his son, in flashback, after his death.

One of the most famous scenes in "The Sound of Music" was between Rolf and Liesl when they sang and danced "Sixteen Going on Seventeen" in the summerhouse. Dan Truhitte also went on to play in other musicals on stage which included "No No Nanette", "Kismet" and "Brigadoon".

On joining the Unites States Marine Corps, his colleagues called him Private Hollywood. He has also been a real estate agent and a teacher, but his love of music and dance has always led him back to performing. His first wife was the stand in for Charmian Carr in her role as Liesl. What is most amazing is that her parents, his in-laws, were called Rolf and Liesl!
