Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This former child star is Noah Hathaway, probably best known as the boy warrior Atreyu from 1984's "The Neverending Story". Noah gave up acting in the late 1980s to pursue dancing and martial arts but ultimately found satisfaction in which of these technical professions?

Answer: Designing customized motorcycles

I have chosen Noah for this quiz because the transition from the nature-loving teenage heartthrob hero to the somewhat rough-edged and tattooed chopper tuning expert is one of the cases where most people would simply not believe the changes. Noah operates his motorcycle shop in Southern California and has also done a little acting again, appearing in smaller roles in two 2011 movies.

As an interesting side note - he played a character named Harry Potter eleven years before the first book by J.K. Rowling was written. Of course that Harry was not a boy wizard but rather a normal American boy struggling with a residential monster in the movie "Troll".
2. Jonathan Brandis, probably best known as the 17-year-old "seaQuest DSV" Ensign Lucas Wolenczak, suffered from a slowly declining movie career after his successes as a child and teen star. His career ultimately ended in 2003 for which tragic reason?

Answer: He hanged himself.

Jonathan's acting career ran well from 1987 to 1999, but then roles dried up for him and he found himself more and more depressed. Allegedly, he had also been drinking heavily in the early years of the new millennium, until November 11, 2003, when he was found in his Los Angeles apartment with severe injuries resulting from a self-inflicted hanging.

He died in hospital on the afternoon of the following day.
3. Another well-known fictional teenage ensign is "Star Trek: The Next Generation"'s Wesley Crusher, played by Wil Wheaton. Wil's acting career never fully became what he envisioned it to be, but he is still enjoying acting. However, today he is most well-known for a different form of artistic expression - which one?

Answer: Writing

Wil had originally left "Star Trek" to pursue other acting opportunities and to avoid being stereotyped into the "geek" role of the technical genius Wesley Crusher, but in the end it turned out that there was likely more of the role in himself than he cared to admit. Today, he is most known as a self-published writer who is embracing his inner geek, be it in games, technology or lifestyle choices.

He creates a piece of art out of looking at his own, varied life with a healthy dose of humor. Besides writing and occasionally acting for television, Wil also travels to conventions and was, during the height of the online poker craze, a semi-successful member of Team PokerStars, appearing in various major tournaments.
4. In a career quite prolific for a child and teenage actor, Barret Oliver has starred in, amongst others, "The Neverending Story", "Frankenweenie", "D.A.R.Y.L" and the "Cocoon" movies. He left acting at age 19 and ultimately became very accomplished and acclaimed in which art form?

Answer: Photography

Barret ended his rather successful acting career in 1989, aged 18, to concentrate on his spiritual development as a Scientologist, working full-time for the organization for several years. After that time, he turned towards photography, especially concentrating on the history of the medium and the use of 19th century techniques and materials to achieve unique artistic results.

He has published a monograph about a complex, almost-forgotten photographic process called the Woodburytype and exhibited his works in various major galleries.
5. Those of you who grew up in the 1970s and 1980s may remember the Kelly Family travelling and performing folk and pop songs. One of their most notable faces was Michael Patrick ("Paddy") Kelly who also enjoyed a rising solo career until, in 2004, he radically changed his life to become which of the following?

Answer: A Catholic monk

In a decision that was unexpected, even by his closest family and life partner of the time, Paddy Kelly renounced his worldly career and life to join a French monastery. He lived there for six years, from 2004 to 2010, until health issues prevented him from further pursuing this lifestyle. Paddy has since then returned to making music, performing religious hymns and songs and travelling in the name of God and for charity.

The proceeds of his 2012 European tour are dedicated to combating starvation in Ethiopia.
6. Probably known better in Europe (and especially Germany) than in the Americas, Thomas (Tommi) Ohrner was a child and teenage actor who played in numerous famous television miniseries in the late 1970s and 1980s. While he still occasionally returns to acting, his adult career saw him mostly in a different television-related job. What is it?

Answer: Reality and game show host

After a brief stint as a radio host for Radio Tele Luxembourg, in the late 1980s, Thomas returned to the small screen as a presenter of various shows, among them German adaptations of "Wheel of Fortune" and "Child's Play". He has lived in Munich for his entire life and is the father of four children (with two more, from a set of triplets, having died right after birth).
7. You will most likely remember Nick Carter from the Backstreet Boys. It is well-known that he is still active in music and that, for a while, he had some issues with alcohol and drugs. However, he is clean today, after a brush with disease made him change his ways. What was he diagnosed with?

Answer: Cardiomyopathy

Carter is suffering from cardiomyopathy - a degeneration of the heart muscle. While not seriously dangerous if properly treated, the disease gave him the needed impetus to change his lifestyle away from drugs, alcohol and late night parties to sports and competitive video gaming.

He has discovered his love for nature as well, becoming a United Nations Special Ambassador for 2007's Year of the Dolphin.
8. Children and teens of the 1980s will remember "The Goonies" and the slightly rounded character of Chunk, convincingly played by Jeff Cohen. It was to remain his only memorable appearance on the big screen, but he can still today be seen making passionate speeches in which profession?

Answer: Attorney at law

In spite of his career change, Mr. Cohen could not completely leave the media industry behind, as the focus of his law practice is business law. It specializes in issues surrounding the media industry including entertainment, technology and intellectual property law.

He is mostly representing artists - actors and directors - in their legal needs, using his own experience during his active years in show business as a major asset.
9. Dustin Diamond is best known for the many years he played Samuel Powers (aka Screech) in the various incarnations of "Saved by the Bell". After the series ended 2004, he found his acting career stalled and resorted to which medium to promote himself?

Answer: An adult movie

With his career stalled, Mr. Diamond tried to build on his "Saved by the Bell" experience by producing and starring in an explicit, adult-oriented parody of the series. This controversial film was not only a commercial failure but also did fall short of the goal of revitalizing his career as a serious mainstream actor which, up to 2012, has only seen minor roles, often playing himself in brief cameos.
10. Danny Lloyd was best known for his appearance in Stanley Kubrick's rendition of Stephen King's horror novel "The Shining". He was cast less for his acting talent (which was still considerable) but more for his ability to focus and concentrate on a task, an ability which helped him in which adult career?

Answer: Professor of Biology

When filming "The Shining", Stanley Kubrick faced the dilemma of having to use a six-year-old boy in several scenes that would be significantly too intense for a child even twice his age. While a lot of this could be achieved with intelligent camera work and editing, Kubrick still required an actor who would treat acting as a science - delivering a convincing performance without actually immersing himself into the scene.

He found this actor in Danny. Not surprisingly, this would remain Danny's only major acting credit before he grew up to become a teacher of sciences and professor of Biology.
