Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which original member of the Beach Boys was NOT one of the Wilson brothers?

Answer: David

David Marks moved across the street from the three Wilson brothers - Dennis, Brian, and Carl - when he was seven years old. He was typically invited to sing along at the Wilson family gatherings, and was also motivated to learn to play the guitar. Marks went on to sing and play rhythm guitar on the first four Beach Boy albums, and toured with them, playing over 100 concerts in the early 1960s. He left the group in 1963, after an argument with Murray Wilson, the boys' father and the band's manger. Over the years he was a session musician, fronted his own band, the Marksmen, and returned to play with The Beach Boys from time to time.

Mike Love, a Wilson cousin, was also an original member of the Beach Boys. Brian's friend from school, Al Jardine, played with the group from time to time in the early days, but did not officially join the group until Marks left. Jardine was not pictured on an album cover until the group's fifth release, "Shut Down Volume 2" (1964).

The Beach Boys, who have sold over 100 million records, have enjoyed amazing longevity, considering Brian's decades-long health problems, the deaths of Dennis (1983) and Carl (1998), and intermittent squabbling between members that split the group in two. In 2012 Brian, Mike, and Al launched a 50th anniversary tour to celebrate their accomplishments and David Marks joined them.

I hope you recognized Michelangelo's "David" in the picture and that it led you to the correct Beach Boy!
2. Archie Manning established a football family dynasty that is still going strong today. Which of his sons is the father of Arch, who played quarterback for the Texas Longhorns in 2023?

Answer: Cooper

Archie, the patriarch of the Manning clan, was the first member of the family to play in the NFL. He played quarterback for Ole Miss before playing in the NFL for fourteen seasons, mostly for the New Orleans Saints (1971-1982). His sons, Peyton (Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos) and Eli (New York Giants), also had successful quarterbacking careers in professional football.

Cooper, the oldest son in Archie's family, was diagnosed with spinal stenosis, which ended his potential football career before he even started college. He has since become a television personality, hosting "The Manning Hour" and appearing in numerous commercials. His oldest son, Arch, has continued the family tradition of playing quarterback, both at the Isidore Newman School in New Orleans and on a college team.

Back in the day, coopers made wooden barrels, tubs, and other vessels that were used for storage. The name cooper is derived from Middle Dutch or Middle Low German, "kūper".
3. James Brolin certainly appears to have passed the acting gene on to members of his family. His granddaughter can be seen playing the role of Mia on the popular show, "Yellowstone". What is her name?

Answer: Eden

James Brolin starred as Steven Kiley on "Marcus Welby, M.D." from 1969-1976, and won a Golden Globe and Primetime Emmy during that time. He went on to star in "Hotel" (1983-88) and play a variety of roles in both television and film.

His son, Josh, had an early introduction to the screen with a role in "The Goonies" (1985), and had parts in a wide array of movies and television programs, including the role of James Butler Hickok in "The Young Riders" (1989-1992). His performance in "No Country for Old Men" (2007) earned him a Screen Actors Guild Award.

Josh's daughter, Eden Brolin, perhaps named for the Garden of Eden seen in the picture, has been following in the family's footsteps. She played Charlie Singer in "Beyond" (2017-2018), and also appeared, mostly in seasons 3 and 4, on the hit television series "Yellowstone", a story about a family that owns a multi-generational cattle ranch in Montana. Eden plays a barrel racer named Mia, who has taken an interest in one of the ranch hands.
4. Which of the following is NOT a daughter of NHRA champion drag racer John Force?

Answer: Laurie

The winner of over twenty NHRA championships, both as a driver and owner, John Force is married to Laurie, and has four daughters - Adria, Ashley, Brittany, and Courtney. Force also owns John Force Racing, which is run by his oldest daughter, Adria Hight.

The other daughters have made names for themselves in drag racing. Ashley Force Hood, named the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series' Rookie of the Year in the Funny Car division (2007), retired from Funny Car drag racing when she had her first child in 2011. Brittany settled on drag racing Top Fuel dragsters and in 2019 was the first woman to be the Number 1 qualifier in Top Fuel at the U.S. Nationals. Force's youngest daughter, Courtney Force-Rahal, earned the record of most Funny Car wins by a NHRA female driver. She retired from racing in 2019.

The name Laurie is derived from Latin, and refers to the laurel wreaths used by the ancients to symbolize victory. It's an appropriate name for the wife of any champion!
5. Who is the oldest member listed of the acting dynasty that includes Melanie Griffith and her daughter, Dakota Johnson?

Answer: Tippi Hedren

Teppi Hedren was a high-profile model, who became an actress after being discovered by Alfred Hitchcock. Her two most famous Hitchcock movies were "Marnie" (1964), and "The Birds" (1963), which earned her a Golden Globe for New Star of the Year. She is seen in the picture with her movie co-star, Rod Taylor. She starred in more than 80 films or television shows throughout her long career.

Hedren's daughter, Melanie Griffith, also has a long list of acting credits; although she has been awarded several Golden Raspberry Awards for Worst Actress, she has also won more prestigious recognition like National Society of Film Critics Award for Best Supporting Actress for "Body Double" (1984) a
Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy for "Working Girl" (1984).

Raised around show business her entire life, Griffith's daughter, Dakota Johnson, has made quite a name for herself in the film industry playing Anastasia Steele in the "Fifty Shades of Grey" trilogy (2015-2018), for which she earned a People's Choice Award. In 2016 she was nominated for the BAFTA Rising Star Award.
6. Charlie Sheen has a brother who starred in "The Breakfast Club" and a father who starred in the "West Wing". What is the family name?

Answer: Estevez

Martin Sheen, an actor well-known for roles such as President Jed Bartlet in "The West Wing" (1999-2006), has won Emmys, Golden Globes, and Screen Actors Guild awards during his long career in movies and television. He has stated that he changed his name from Ramón Estévez in hopes that it would open doors for him in what he viewed as a prejudicial industry. Born in Ohio, to an immigrant father from Spain, Martin's birth last name is patronymic, and means son of Stephen.

His son, Emilio, an actor and director who appeared in "The Breakfast Club" (1985), "Young Guns" (1988), and "Bobby" (2006), revealed that his father advised him to NOT make the same mistake that he did when he changed his name.

Emilio has a younger brother, Ramon Estévez, an actor whose work is sometimes credited with the name Ramón Sheen, and an older brother, Charlie ("Two and a Half Men" (2003-11), who reportedly used the last name Sheen so he wouldn't be confused with his uncle, Carlos Estévez.
7. There are several father/son dynasties in professional sports. Can you find the pair who played in the NFL?

Answer: Steve DeOssie/Zak DeOssie

Of course, sports fans recognize baseball's Boone and Ripken famlies, as well as the Bryants who played in the NBA. The name DeOssie may seen a bit unfamiliar, because even though they had careers in the NFL, neither played the position that seems to garner more attention.

Dad Steve was a linebacker who played for Boston College before his stint in the NFL, playing for four different teams. Son Zak was a long snapper who went to Brown University and played for the New York Giants. So what makes them so special?

They were the first father/son duo to win the Vince Lombardi trophy for Super Bowl championships while playing for the same team - the New York Giants. Zac was on the Super Bowl XLII and XLVI championship team, while Steve's team was the Super Bowl XXV champions. How long do you think it will be before that happens again?
8. Two brothers named Alex and Eddie founded a rock group in 1973. What was the name of the group?

Answer: Van Halen

Eddie Van Halen was not only the co-founder of the rock band Van Halen, but also its lead guitarist. He was known for his innovative and virtuosic playing style, which influenced countless musicians in the rock and metal genres. One of his guitars is seen in the picture. Eddie's brother Alex was also a member of the band, playing drums.

Together, the Van Halen brothers helped to shape the sound of hard rock in the late 1970s and 1980s, with hits like "Jump," "Panama", and "Hot for Teacher". Eddie's son, Wolfgang, replaced Michael Anthony on bass in 2007, the same year the group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Van Halen disbanded after Eddie's passing in 2020.
9. What is the last name of the following literary giants: J.R.R., Christopher, Michael, and Simon?

Answer: Tolkien

J.R.R. Tolkien was the king of fantasy fiction, the highly popular - to this day - author of works like "The Hobbit" (1937) and "The Lord of the Rings" (1954). But he was much more. He fought for the UK during WWI. He was a university professor. And he left behind unfinished works for his son, Christopher, to complete.

Christopher Tolkien edited twenty-four volumes of his father's work, including a translation of "Beowulf" (2014), and completed and published stories such as "The Silmarillion" (1977) and "The History of Middle-earth" (1983-1996), which had twelve volumes! He also worked as a lecturer and editor.

J.R.R. Tolkien also has grandsons who followed in the family business; Christopher's son, Simon, writes novels, and Michael, the son of Tolkien's oldest son, Michael, is a poet.

The picture was taken at a location in New Zealand. Did you notice the hobbit holes?
10. Marie and Irene Curie are a mother/daughter duo who have famously won Nobel Prizes, but did you know that each had husbands who were also Nobel laureates? What were their names?

Answer: Pierre and Frederic

Members of the Curie Family are rock stars of science, winning five Nobel prizes. Marie and her husband, Pierre, won the Nobel in Physics in 1903 for their discovery of radioactivity; after Pierre's death she went on to win the Nobel in Chemistry in 1911 for isolating pure radium. She was the first woman to win a Nobel in two scientific disciplines.

Their daughter, Irène, married Frédéric Joliot-Curie, and together they won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1935 after discovering that radioactive atoms could be created artificially. They were the second married couple to win a Nobel. With the exception of Pierre, who lost his life in an street accident, the others eventually gave their lives in exchange for the scientific advancements they discovered.

Henry Richardson Labouisse, Jr., the husband of Irene's sister, Ève, won the Noble Peace Prize in 1965. He worked in the U.S. Department of State to help with the enactment of the Marshall Plan after WWII, and also served as an U.S. ambassador to France and Greece. A director of several relief agencies, such as the United Nations Children's Fun, his Nobel was related to his work for UNICEF in helping to provide relief in developing and war-torn countries.

Marie is seen in the picture with her two daughters, Irène and Ève. Irène was the oldest, and the one standing on the ground in the picture.
