MaryJo (July 26, 1940 - July 19, 1969) was drowned when United States Senator Edward Kennedy's car went off the Chappaquiddick Bridge in Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. For some reason, Kennedy waited nine hours after extricating himself from the car to report the accident to the police. There was no 'real' investigation although Kennedy's insurance company paid the Kopechne family $140,000.00.
