Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Event 2 - $40,000 40th Annual No-Limit Hold'em, Noah Schwartz holds 3c 3h and Justin Bonomo holds Ad Tc. The board reads As Kd 3s 5s. If you are Bonomo how many outs do you have to win the hand? (An out is a card that can come to give you the win)

Answer: Zero

There are no cards that you could catch to win this hand. As it played out in the tournament Bonomo misplayed the hand by pushing all in on Schwartz's check raise on the flop. Besides 33, AJ, AQ, AK, A3, AA, and KK would all dominate AT on the flop along with A5 and 55 on the turn. Bonomo's fold equity far outweighed his call or all in equity in this hand. 2. In Event 2 - $40,000 40th Annual No-Limit Hold'em, Andy Bloch holds Jh 7h and Brian Rast holds Ad 8s. The board reads Qh 3s 2h. If you are Bloch how many outs do you have?

Answer: 15

Any remaining J or 7 would give you the win (6 outs). Any heart would give you a flush (9 outs). That gives you a total of 15 outs and you are the favorite to win the hand at 54.24%. All percentages for this quiz are calculated using www.cardplayer.com. As it played out Bloch failed to connect with any of his outs and was knocked out of the tournament.

3. In Event 2 - $40,000 40th Annual No-Limit Hold'em, Brian Rast holds Kh Kc and Vitaly Lunkin holds 5d 5c. The flop comes 8c 8h 5s. If you are Rast how many outs do you have?

Answer: Four

This is a bad flop for Rast because it looks somewhat harmless since it is a rainbow flop with a paired board. At this point you would only have four outs, either of the remaining K's (2 outs) or 8's (2 outs). In the tournament they got all of their money in pre-flop with Rast in a dominating position and an 80.28% favorite. After the flop Rast's odds changed dramatically with only a 16.77% chance of winning. On the river the 5h hit sealing Lunkin's victory.

4. In Event 2 - $40,000 40th Annual No-Limit Hold'em, Isaac Haxton holds Ks Ts and Vitaly Lunkin holds As Ad. The board reads Kc 5c 3h 6s. If you are Haxton how many outs do you have?

Answer: Five

You have five outs here - either of the remaining K's (2 outs) or one of the T's (3 outs). You only have a 11.36% chance to win the hand. In the tournament this hand occurred heads up with Lunkin holding a commanding chip lead. He was trapping Haxton both pre-flop with a smooth call and on the flop with a check raise. By the time Lunkin led out on the turn Haxton was pot committed so he pushed all in and Lunkin called. Haxton hit a miracle T to extend the match.

5. In Event 2 - $40,000 40th Annual No-Limit Hold'em, Vitaly Lunkin holds Qc Ts and Isaac Haxton holds Qs 8c. The board reads Ac 5c 4c 8d. If you are Lunkin how many outs do you have?

Answer: 10

Any remaining club would give you a flush (8 outs - normally there are 9 outs for the flush but Haxton holds the 8c). You also can hit any remaining T (2 outs - the Tc is already counted in the flush outs so does not apply here). Thus you have 10 outs and a 22.73% chance of winning. As it played out all of the money was in the middle on the flop with aggressive play from both players. Haxton hit his miracle three outer on the turn to take the lead in the hand but the river came 2c giving Lunkin the win.

6. In Event 15 - $5,000 No-Limit Hold'em, Danny Illingworth holds Ts 4d and Tom Braband holds Jc 8c. The board reads Tc 7h 5c. If you are Braband how many outs do you have to win the hand?

Answer: 15

Any of the remaining Jacks will give you a higher pair (3 outs). Any remaining club will give you a flush (9 outs). Any remaining 9 besides the 9c will give you a straight (3 outs - the 9c was already included in the flush possibilities so does not count here). Therefore you would have 15 outs and actually be a favorite to win the hand. You have a 54.95% chance to win the hand. Although Braband was a favorite after the flop, he failed to connect with any of his outs and lost the hand.

7. In Event 15 - $5,000 No-Limit Hold'em, Danny Illingworth holds Ts 4d and Tom Braband holds Jc 8c. The board reads Tc 7h 5c. The 6h comes on the turn. If you are Braband how many outs do you have to win the hand?

Answer: 17

The 6h now gives you two more outs with any remaining 4 giving you a straight (2 outs - not 4 because your opponent holds the 4d and the 4c would give you a flush). Any of the remaining Jacks will give you a higher pair (3 outs). Any remaining club will give you a flush (9 outs). Any remaining 9 besides the 9c will give you a straight (3 outs - the 9c was already included in the flush possibilities so does not count here).

Therefore you would have 17 outs but have only a 38.64% chance to win the hand.

In the tournament, Illingworth hit the 8h on the river to improve his already winning top pair and seal his victory with a straight. http://www.cardplayer.com/poker-tools/hand-matchups/914
8. In Event 15 - $5,000 No-Limit Hold'em, Jimmy Fricke holds Ah Jc and Jason Dewitt holds As Ac. The board reads 9h 5h 2h 2d. If you are Fricke how many outs do you have?

Answer: Nine

Your only hope for winning the hand is to hit one of the remaining hearts for a flush. Therefore you have 9 outs and a 20.45% chance of winning. In the tournament all of the money went in pre-flop and Fricke found himself to be dominated. The flop however proved to be very advantageous to Fricke but he could not connect on either the turn or river and lost the hand.

9. In Event 15 - $5,000 No-Limit Hold'em, Blair Hinkle holds As Kc and Nenad Medic holds 7d 5d. The flop comes 4h 3c 2s. If you are Medic how many outs do you have?

Answer: 10

Any 6 would give you a straight (4 outs), any 7 would give you a pair (3 outs), and any of the remaining A's would give you a wheel (3 outs - not 4 because Hinkle is holding an A). Your 5's are dead because they would give your opponent the wheel. Thus you would have 10 outs and a 37.17% chance of winning. In the tournament Medic hit a miracle 6d on the river to win the hand.

10. In Event 29 - $10,000 World Championship Heads Up No-Limit Hold'em, Steve O'Dwyer holds 10s 8s and John Duthie holds 4h 3c. The board reads Kd 6s 5h 2s. If you are O'Dwyer how many outs do you have?

Answer: 9

Your opponent has made his straight so pairing either of your cards does you no good. You need one of the remaining spades to win the hand so you have 9 outs and a 20.45% chance of winning. As it played out in the tournament O'Dwyer raised Duthie's bet on the flop with air but picked up a flush draw on the turn. Unfortunately for him the card that gave him his draw completed Duthie's hand and he could not catch up on the river.
