Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Molly Weasley
Answer: Married to a Weasley
Molly was born a Prewett but met and fell in love with Arthur Weasley well before the start of the series or Harry's birth, as her youngest son, Ron, is Harry's age. The couple have seven children together, with the first six being boys.
2. Fleur Delacour
Answer: Married to a Weasley
Fleur is first introduced in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" as the beautiful champion from Beauxbatons, the French wizarding school. Various men end up having a crush on her, but she only has eyes for Bill Weasley, Ron's oldest brother, and she marries him in the first half of the "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" after an initially tumultuous relationship with his mother, Molly.
3. Hermione Granger
Answer: Married to a Weasley
When Hermione meets Ron Weasley on the Hogwarts Express as an 11-year old, she very likely did not consider the possibility that he would be her future husband. They have been downright cruel to each other as teenagers before finally realizing that they want to be together right before the Battle of Hogwarts in the final book.
In the series epilogue, it is revealed that they have married and have two children.
4. Harry Potter
Answer: Married to a Weasley
Harry Potter first met his future wife when she was only 10 years old and her mother was helping him get onto the train platform. He would save her life in her first year at Hogwarts. She had always been attracted to him but put the thought to the back of her mind after it seemed that he didn't share her interest.
However, they begin dating in "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince", before Harry breaks it off with her due to his involvement with Voldemort's mission. After Voldemort is killed, Harry and Ginny marry and have three children.
5. Peter Pettigrew
Answer: Animagi
Peter Pettigrew's Animagus form reveals a lot about JK Rowling's opinion of him - he turns into a small rat. His rodent form comes in handy as he is able to transform into a rat to escape from Sirius and Lupin after he is exposed as a human. This escape would eventually lead to the reanimation of Lord Voldemort.
6. Rita Skeeter
Answer: Animagi
Rita Skeeter is an unregistered Animagus - she is able to transform herself into a beetle at will, allowing her to listen to conversations and later report on them. The fact that she did not inform the Ministry of Magic about this ability is a significant crime, and Hermione uses this knowledge to blackmail the reporter into interviewing Harry for "The Quibbler" in "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix".
7. Sirius Black
Answer: Animagi
Sirius can transform into a large, black dog at will. He was able to escape Azkhaban in his Animagus form, and was also able to use this form to maintain his sanity while in prison, since dementors are not as effective on animals. When Harry first sees him as a dog, he is told that he is being haunted by he "Grimm", a large black dog that is the sign of imminent death.
8. Minerva McGonagall
Answer: Animagi
The first time we see the Transfiguration teacher, she is a cat watching the Dursleys following the murder of Harry's parents in Godric's Hollow. She expresses her displeasure to Dumbledore, who assures her that this is the only choice that Harry has. Hermione later states that McGonagall is a registered Animagus, having looked her name up in the registry.
9. Ariana Dumbledore
Answer: Died before the first book
Ariana was Albus and Aberforth Dumbledore's younger sister. As a result of a heated duel between Gindelwald and Albus as teenagers, Ariana was accidentally struck dead. The guilt of that day would stay with Albus for the rest of his life, as he was not even sure if he was the one that dealt the blow that killed her.
10. Lily Potter
Answer: Died before the first book
The very first chapter of "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" follows Vernon Dursley and the whispers that he hears about "the Potters and their son Harry". This implies that Lily and James had just been killed, and Voldemort had just been defeated. Lily died trying to protect her baby from Voldemort, and her sacrifice saved her son's life.
11. Merope Gaunt
Answer: Died before the first book
Voldemort's mother died shortly after childbirth, after telling her caretakers what she wanted her son's first and middle names to be. She had lived a miserable life, abused constantly by her father and brother, and pined after the muggle Tom Riddle, a man who did not return her affections whatsoever. She likely used a Love Potion to enslave him before he left her and her son.
12. Myrtle Warren
Answer: Died before the first book
Myrtle died during Tom Riddle's years at Hogwarts, the only fatal victim of the deadly Basilisk. She would leave her imprint on Earth as a ghost that haunted the girls' bathroom, nicknamed "Moaning Myrtle". The basilisk killed her immediately by making eye contact with her.
13. Remus Lupin
Answer: Defense Against the Dark Arts Teachers
Lupin was the DADA teacher throughout "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkhaban", before his childhood rival Severus Snape accidentally on-purpose revealed to the entire staff and some students that he was a werewolf. Lupin knew that angry letters from parents were bound to arrive, so he resigned his position with dignity.
14. Dolores Umbridge
Answer: Defense Against the Dark Arts Teachers
Likely the most malicious and unlikable character in the series outside of Voldemort and his Death Eaters, Umbridge was introduced as the ministry representative to Hogwarts in the fifth book. She made it her mission to ensure that students do not use practical magic in her classroom, in order to reassure delusional minister Cornelius Fudge that Dumbledore was not training an army to overthrow him.
15. Gilderoy Lockhart
Answer: Defense Against the Dark Arts Teachers
The handsome best-selling author is soon revealed to be a complete fraud at the end of "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets", as he had performed memory charms on others who had bravely encountered various dark creatures and taken the credit for their work.
His arrogance and pettiness would result in his own undoing, as his attempt to erase Harry and Ron's memories backfires as he was using Ron's faulty wand. He becomes mentally disabled and is remanded to the magical hospital, St. Mungo's.
16. Severus Snape
Answer: Defense Against the Dark Arts Teachers
Snape had always wanted the constantly open Defense Against the Dark Arts position, but he was always refused the job by Dumbledore. After Horace Slughorn agrees to become the Potions Master, Snape finally gets the job he has always wanted. As with all other teachers of the subject, his tenure is short lived and he flees the castle after his apparent murder of Dumbledore at the end of the sixth book.
