Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. First published in 1991, the books in the 'For Dummies' series have long been an easy reference resource for people who need to know the basics. Which of these was the first in their product line?

Answer: DOS For Dummies

Originally published by International Data Group, the "For Dummies" series commenced with a primer for DOS (later MS-DOS) at a time when computers were finally being adopted by non-commercial users. Characterized by their distinct, yellow covers, "For Dummies" books addressed the basics (and maybe some more complicated concepts) in concise and layman's writing so that anyone could pick up a complex topic provided they were embarking on that topic.

The books were so popular, over time, that they touched on nearly every topic under the sun though their computer reference books were, generally, their most popular with "Windows For Dummies" selling more than fifteen million copies internationally.
2. Mnemonics are clever memory tricks to recall lists or orders. Which of these mnemonics generally refers to a geographical topic?

Answer: HOMES

Derived from the Greek roots pertaining to memory, the word mnemonic can refer to a number of types of devices used to recall processes, names, items, or lists that can be relevant to different fields of study, and all of the answers here are, specifically, Acrostic Mnemonics, or mnemonics that use initials to be recalled.

HOMES is the geographical one. This mnemonic is meant to recall the North American Great Lakes (Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior).

ROY G BIV is the order of colours in a rainbow (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet).

BEDMAS/PEDMAS is found in math and is the order of operations for solving algebraic equations from left to right (Brackets/Parentheses, Exponents, Division & Multiplication, Addition & Subtraction).

EGBDF is the mnemonic for lines on a music staff using a treble clef. Alternatively, the phrase 'Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge' is a mnemonic for the same thing. The spaces between these lines spell out FACE, which is another mnemonic.
3. A green owl is the mascot for which language-learning mobile app first launched in 2012?

Answer: Duolingo

Originally released as an app designed to teach users any language through easy-to-digest daily lessons, Duolingo has since grown to become one of the leading educational apps in general, providing not only language aids, but help for math and music training. Famously, the app has utilized a green owl as a mascot (named Duo) who, over time, has been the subject of online memes partly because of his insistence that users train regularly to keep up their skills and partly because Duolingo has leaned into viral marketing.
4. There are many types of foreign aid that contribute to assistance for nations and regions in need. Which of these sources would be considered faith-based?

Answer: Salvation Army

Founded in London, England in 1865, the Salvation Army's goal, since its inception, was to support the poor and destitute with food and aid whether through halfway houses, goodwill, stores, and international aid (especially to nations in need of humanitarian efforts), and in doing so they grew to become one of the most recognizable names in charitable efforts the world over. Notably, the Salvation Army's mission is built around Protestant readings of the Bible, and it's no surprise their efforts have also been responsible for bringing churches and missionary works in the past as well.
5. United States Pell Grants have, generally, been financial aid given to which of these demographics?

Answer: Late adolescents

Named after U.S. Senator Claiborne Pell, the Pell Grant is a federal subsidy that allows students enrolling in undergraduate studies at American post-secondary institutions to have their tuition costs covered. Generally, these grants are distributed and determined by need from student to student, and the priority is made for enrolment from low-income households.

As they are grants, they do not need to be repaid unlike general university/college loan programs.
6. The default Office Assistant for Microsoft Suite products has, since Windows 98, been which of these?

Answer: A paper clip

Although this anthropomorphic paper clip was originally known as 'Clippit' upon introduction in the early Microsoft Office suites, he is commonly known as Clippy in most internet spheres. Originally, the Office Assistant functioned almost identically to the typical Help function in the relevant programs (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.), but did so from the screen in use without pulling the user away from their work.

Although Clippy became the most famous (leading to his implementation as an emoji on Microsoft devices), users could download alternatives to use instead, like a cat, a dog, and a cartoon Albert Einstein.
7. Hearing aid prosthetics are generally named and associated with which part of the inner ear?

Answer: Cochlea

For those with significant (but not total) hearing loss, a cochlear implant might be the solution. Surgically implanted into the ear, this device is designed to stimulate nerves in the cochlea to aid the user in hearing sounds in various environments. While it won't help so much in loud and busy spaces, this can often mean a world of difference in day-to-day living and communication otherwise.

The cochlea, found in the inner ear, receives vibrations from sound waves that are transmitted to the brain via electrical impulses. It's the nerves in there that take advantage of the implant.
8. Bob Geldof organized Live Aid in the mid-1980s in support of which cause?

Answer: Famine relief

With famine ongoing in Ethiopia from 1983 to 1985, it was Boomtown Rats frontman Bob Geldof who brought the issue to light, pulling together countless figures from the music and entertainment industries for a charity single, "Do They Know It's Christmas?", in late 1984. The song was so popular (and such a chart-topper) that it led to the Live Aid concerts in July 1985, one of which was in London, another of which was in Philadelphia, and several satellites of which were hosted around the globe.

The UK concert featured sets from Sting, Phil Collins, U2, Queen, David Bowie, The Who, Elton John, and Paul McCartney; the U.S. version featured Madonna, The Beach Boys, Neil Young, Tom petty, Led Zeppelin, Mick Jagger, and Bob Dylan. Collins, notably, flew over the Atlantic to appear at both shows.

Geldof's success in fundraising for Live Aid made famine relief a key item for international focus and concern. Twenty years later, he hosted Live 8 for poverty relief.
9. Which of these will unlock the 'Super Guide' in the "New Super Mario Bros." video games for the Nintendo Wii and Wii U?

Answer: Repeated deaths

Bringing back classic 2D platforming, "New Super Mario Bros. Wii" and "New Super Mario Bros. U" were the first console sidescrolling "Mario" games since the SNES, and in order to appeal even further to all users of the popular Wii system, Nintendo employed a new feature, the Super Guide, to aid players stuck at tough spots.

In the Wii version, if players died eight times in a level, a green block would appear, allowing players to let the game control them and cross the finish line without any need to overcome the obstacles.

In the Wii U version, the death count was reduced to five. This feature was removed in later 2D games, failing to reappear in the Nintendo Switch game "Super Mario Wonder".
10. What two-word phrase (containing 'Aid') refers to assistance given in the moment to those experiencing injury or onset illness?

Answer: First Aid

First aid, as a concept, has evolved over thousands of years, and we know that it was implemented in early wars in an attempt to heal or save the lives of wounded soldiers. Today, first aid is used in all manner of ways, and training can be provided to the general public to ensure safety under needful circumstances.

These involve techniques like CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver but can also be as simple as sanitizing and dressing wounds or handling symptoms of heat exhaustion, poison, or strain. This is, of course, why traditional at-home first aid kits contain basics like bandages, pins, and sterile wipes.
