Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which commonly used love phrase originated in the poem "In Memoriam A.H.H" (1849) by Alfred, Lord Tennyson?

Answer: Better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all.

The poem was written by Lord Tennyson over a period of about 17 years after the sudden death of a friend. It was one of Queen Victoria's favourite literary works. She found it a comfort after the death of her husband, Prince Albert. The poem deals with a number of philosophical questions of the Victorian era and was influenced by thoughts such as the emerging theory of evolution.
2. In the British romantic comedy, "Love Actually" (2003), what is the profession of Hugh Grant's character?

Answer: Prime Minister

The film explores a variety of relationships and the complexity of the love that occurs in them. One of the relationships in the movie is that between Hugh Grant's character, David the newly elected Prime Minister, and a junior member of the household, Natalie. The film also stars Emma Thompson, Keira Knightley and Colin Firth.
3. "Romeo and Juliet"(1597) is arguably the world's most famous love story. What is Juliet's surname at the beginning of Shakespeare's tragedy about the star-cross'd lovers?

Answer: Capulet

Set in the Italian city of Verona, the play tells the story of forbidden love between two offspring of the city's most notable enemies. Although the main characters tragically die young, they appear to experience a love that few ever do in a long life, and their deaths reunite their families.
4. One of the greatest showings of love is when a man proposes marriage to a woman. What common engagement tradition began when Archduke Maximilian of Austria proposed to Mary of Burgundy in 1477?

Answer: Offering of a diamond engagement ring

Although engagement rings have been used for more than 2000 years, particularly in Roman cultures, this engagement was the first documented example of a diamond ring being offered in Western culture. Mary of Burgundy was her parent's only child and was the heir to the French Burgundian area. Mary selected her husband from a variety of suitors who wished to marry her and upon her marriage she became Archduchess Mary of Austria.
5. The song "Everlasting Love", written by Buzz Cason and Mac Gayden was a hit for a number of singers and bands. Which of these was NOT one of those singers and bands?

Answer: The Beatles

Robert Knight was the first of those mentioned to have a hit with the song in 1967. U2 released their version of the song in 1989. Gloria Estefan produced her version in 1995 and the song had much success on worldwide charts and peaked at number one on U.S. Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play.
6. The Latin term vena amoris translates in English to vein of love. In which body part did the ancient Greeks believe this vein existed?

Answer: Finger

The ancient Greeks believed that the vena amoris was located in the fourth finger on the left hand and ran all the way from the finger to the heart. This is believed to be the reason that wedding and engagement rings are worn on this particular finger in Western societies.
7. In Celtic tradition, which fruit represents love and sexuality?

Answer: Apples

The Celts believed that apples were a symbol of love because of the amount of time they lasted after they were picked from a tree. Apples have been seen as a symbol of love since the time of the ancient Greeks and many paintings of the goddess Venus are of her holding an apple.
8. What is the first name of the daughter that musician and actress Courtney Love had with her husband Kurt Cobain?

Answer: Frances

Frances Bean Cobain was born in August 1992, six months after the wedding of her famous parents. She was named after the guitarist Frances McKee and her middle name originated due to her father thinking she looked like a kidney bean in an ultrasound. Her godmother was Drew Barrymore and her godfather Michael Stipe, from the band R.E.M.
9. According to Greek mythology, who was the goddess of love, lust, beauty, seduction and pleasure?

Answer: Aphrodite

Aphrodite was supposedly born from the sea from the cut off genitals of Uranus. She was married to another Greek god named Hephaestus, but was unhappy in her marriage and had a string of other lovers, including the god of war, Ares.
10. The 2010 song "Love the Way You Lie" by Eminem featured the vocals of which female performer?

Answer: Rihanna

The song is the second single from Eminem's album "Recovery" (2010). Reportedly Eminem especially selected Rhianna to provide vocals for the song and she instantly agreed to work with him. The song deals with some of the negatives that can happen when love disappears from a relationship.
