Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Dangers can exist in the most seemingly harmless places. One place, for example, is Morcambe Bay, England, known for its abundant bird and marine life. You could be walking along and suddenly start sinking into the ground because this place is known for numerous pits of quicksand. What's a good thing to have with you when traversing this region?

Answer: sturdy pole

When walking in areas with quicksand, it's best to bring a sturdy pole. Place the pole on the surface of the quicksand, then flop your back on the top of the pole. Try to get the pole under your hips, perpendicular to your spine. Once you're level, slowly make your way to harder and safer ground.
2. In the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, Spain, danger is the appeal of this place. What if you were caught face to face with one of those angry bulls charging straight at you and you have nowhere to run and no cover? Would you do?

Answer: Start removing your clothing and throw it away from your body

Though I would probably feel like curling up into a ball, the best thing to do for yourself would be to start throwing your clothes away from you. The bull will usually veer towards whatever is thrown. I'm sure when you have a raging bull staring you down and your life's on the line modesty will not mean much to you at that moment.
3. Dog sledding in Greenland sounds cool, but it's bitterly cold there so you have to be well prepared in case you go off course or get lost. Frostbite is always a constant threat in these climates. What should you do to treat frostbite?

Answer: Apply warm compresses for 10-20 minutes

You definitely should not apply hot or cold compresses or water to an affected area, as it can cause severe tissue damage. You should apply warm compresses or submerge in water that's about 100-105 degrees Fahrenheit. Petroleum jelly will help with chapping, but won't do squat for frostbite.
4. The ocean offers a wide variety of hidden dangers. Let's say you're on a relaxing cruise and en route to Cozumel, Mexico and there is an explosion on the ship. You barely make it to a life raft, and it's just your bad luck that you end up drifting away from everyone. All you have on board are your reading glasses, a can of soda and your "lucky" Mickey Mouse wristwatch. Which of these items can be used to signal help?

Answer: All of them

You could use all of these items as a signal because of their reflective surface, which of course, catches the sunlight. Other options could be foil or a small mirror.
5. Imagine the picturesque beaches of Cozumel, Mexico, I'm sure it's relaxing, but people rarely take into account the perilousness of this place. Let's say you decide to take a swim in the ocean and end up pretty far from shore. Suddenly a shark appears and seems really interested in you. What should you be prepared to do?

Answer: Fight the shark

Believe it or not, but your best option is to fight back. The most sensitive points to hit are the gills and the eyes, not the nose, which is a common misconception. If you strike those areas with your fist, you have a great chance of scaring the shark away. All the other options just make you look more like shark prey.
6. The Rocky Mountains is one of the most beautiful places in America. Mountain expeditions are a popular attraction, yet a very risky venture if you're unprepared. Anything can happen and it's good to have knowledge of the trip you're about to undertake. For instance, what is the leading cause of death of someone lost in the mountains?

Answer: hypothermia

Hypothermia is the number one cause of death when someone is lost in the mountains. Hypothermia is a condition where your body temperature drops below normal and it can cause extreme shivering, a difficult time talking and thinking, loss of the use of your arms and legs and ultimately your organs begin to fail and death follows if not treated quickly.

The best way to avoid this horrible death is to come prepared for the climate you're going to face and always check weather conditions beforehand. If you find yourself in danger of hypothermia the most important thing to do is to quickly find shelter and stay warm and dry.
7. Iquitos, Peru is a good place to start an Amazon River expedition. The wide variety of wildlife is both breathtaking and deadly. Of all the dangerous animals in this region, alligators scare me the most. Which of these tips for avoiding an alligator attack is NOT true?

Answer: You can touch alligator eggs as long as you're a safe distance from the mother

Never mess with an alligator's babies. These mommies are highly protective of their eggs and offspring. I think this goes for a majority of mothers out there. Mess with our babies and we'll turn on you!
8. I love the desert, especially on my way to Las Vegas! Imagine you're on your way across the desert, using a rarely used shortcut away from the main highway. All of a sudden your car engine dies. You're stuck in the desert, miles away from the nearest inhabitants. You are definitely not a mechanic so you don't know what's wrong with the car. What would be the best thing for you to do right now?

Answer: set a signal fire

The most prudent thing to do first would be to set a signal fire. It's important to stay with your vehicle if that's where your emergency supplies are. You don't want to go walking through the desert with no supplies and no idea where you're going. Good things to have in your vehicle in case of emergency are tools, a five gallon jug of water, extra oil and gas, a flashlight, first aid kit and car supplies like extra fan belts and a spare tire.
9. One of the most dangerous predicaments you can put yourself in is something you do just about everyday. Not suprisingly, it's driving. In 2005 there were over 43,000 auto accident fatalities in the U.S. Hydroplaning is a common cause for auto accidents. You could be on the expressway, hit a patch of water and oil and begin to hydroplane. Which of these should you NOT do?

Answer: slam on the brakes

Instead of slamming the brakes you should pump the brakes softly. You should regain traction by doing this. This is a frightening experience and you'll probably be pretty shaken up by it. It's okay to carefully pull over and recompose yourself before continuing on your way.
10. Let's say you're at home where you feel the most secure. It's spring and you decide do some gardening in the backyard. You start trimming some bushes and suddenly you're surrounded by a swarm of killer bees! Which of these options is the WORST thing that you could do?

Answer: Jump into the nearest swimming pool or body of water

I once thought this was a perfectly good way to escape a swarm of bees, but alas I was dead wrong (pun intended, sorry). Common sense would tell you that the bees will just wait around until you surface and resume stinging you. You're in an even worse predicament being attacked in the water! The Africanized honeybee, or killer bee, swarms most often in the spring and fall seasons, and can chase you three times the distance of regular honeybees - scary! Well, I've learned that anything can happen to you no matter where you are, so always be prepared and know what the conditions and risks are wherever you go.
