Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I've pushed the button and now I'm red and white, sweet and kind of crooked. What am I?

Answer: Candy cane

I really am sweet, you know! Ask anyone who enjoys the wonderful treat called a candy cane. A candy cane is, of course, a cane-shaped candy and is usually made in either peppermint or cinnamon flavor. I didn't get my red stripes until the early 20th century. Before that, I was plain white. Traditionally, the candy cane is a symbol of Christmas.
2. Well, sweet or not, I decided to push the button again. I have suddenly been transformed into something electrical and hand-held, which often comes with a diffuser. What am I?

Answer: Hair dryer

The first hairdryer was created by Alexandre F. Godefoy in 1890. In 1922, they evolved to become hand-held. Hair dryers have electric fans, settings for speed and temperature, and often come with an attachment called a diffuser. The purpose of a diffuser is to create curl, body and texture to the hair in a gentle fashion by distributing the heat in a gentle manner.
3. Tired of having my buttons pushed, I decided to transform again. Now I am a tiny, soft South American animal that looks a lot like a miniature chinchilla. What did I change into?

Answer: Degu

The degu (Octodon degus) is a small rodent that comes from Chile. The degu is related quite closely to both the chinchilla and the guinea pig. The fifth toe on its forefoot is small and has a nail rather than a claw. The degu is a very social little animal and makes a fine pet due to its great personality. It can live up to 13 years.

The lemming (Lagurus lagurus) is a small rodent which dwells near the Arctic. The common vampire bat (Desmodus rotundus) is a species of bat. It has a dietary trait called hematophagy, which means its food source is blood. The gundi (Ctenodactylus gundi) is a small and stocky rodent found in Africa. It dwells in the desert, obtaining its fluids from what it eats.
4. I got tired of crawling around, so I got into my transforming machine, pushed the button and am now a huge volcano from long ago. This volcano blew up and became Crater Lake, Oregon. What is my volcano name?

Answer: Mount Mazama

Mount Mazama, Oregon, USA erupted over 6,000 years ago. It was named Mount Mazuma well after that eruption took place. This mountain was 12,000 feet high, exploded and became a 1,900 foot deep crater, named Crater Lake. It is now filled with beautiful blue water. In the middle of Crater Lake you can find Wizard Island, which was created through another explosion. Crater Lake was made into a National Park in the year 1902.

Mount Tambora is situated in Indonesia. In 1816, this volcano erupted on April 10-11, killing approximately 92,000 people. The ash and dust clouds affected most of the Northern Hemisphere and caused very cool temperatures and crops to fail. That year is often referred to as "the year without summer". Mount Pinatubo is in the Philippines. In 1991 its eruption was considered to be ten times that of the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helen's, Washington, USA. Its cloud of smoke and ash reached over 19 miles in height, making this one of the biggest eruptions in the 20th century. Finally, Mount Pelee, located in Martinique, had a huge pyroclastic flow from an eruption on May 8, 1902. Nothing was known about pyroclastic flows (deadly clouds filled with hot gas and thick liquidized volcanic particles) at the time of the eruption.
5. I decided that being a volcano could get me quite hot under the collar, so I changed again. Now I am a very romantic, aromatic, thorny and beautiful flower. What am I?

Answer: Rose

Roses are perennial flowers that come in shrubs or vines. There are over one hundred species of roses in a multitude of colors. Red roses symbolize love and are very aromatic. Roses are used a lot in the perfume industry. If you have a rose garden, encouraging ladybugs will help reduce the harmful aphids which suck the sap of roses and weaken the plant.
6. I nearly ended up in a bouquet so I quickly made a run for it to my transforming machine and became a C-130. What am I this time?

Answer: Hercules aircraft

The C-130 Hercules is a four-engine turboprop transport aircraft. It was built by Lockheed for use by the military. This type of aircraft first flew on August 23, 1954 and was publicly introduced in December 1957. With its versatile airframe this aircraft has a multitude of purposes such as airborne assault, search and rescue, weather reconnaissance, cargo transport and much more.
7. I really liked being a C-130. Later, however, I noticed something in the ocean. It was a fish that changed from a solid color to a light blue with stripes. I wanted to be that, so I pushed the button and now I'm swimming. What am I?

Answer: Sailfish

With an erectile dorsal fin that often stretches the full length of the back, sailfish (Istiophorus albicans and Istiophorus platypterus) live in the warmer waters of all the oceans. Being blue to grey in color, these fish can change their body to a light blue with stripes when they get excited.

This tactic allows them to confuse their prey, making capture a lot easier. It also signals other sailfish. These fish have elongated bills which make them look similar to both marlins and swordfish. Normally, they keep their sail (dorsal fin) folded down to one side when they are swimming, but if they feel threatened or excited they raise the fin which makes them look a lot bigger than they are.

They also have been seen raising their sail when feeding, to herd their prey.

They reach lengths up to 10 feet (3m) and attain weights as much as 200 lb (90 kg). These are fast fish and have been clocked at 70 mph (110 km/h).
8. It was time to return to my transforming machine and turn myself into something else. I decided on becoming a planet. My favorite planet is a lovely blue color and is the eighth planet from the sun.

Answer: Neptune

Neptune is the eighth planet from the sun. It is nearly 2.8 billion miles (4.5 billion kilometers) from the Sun. It orbits the sun once every 165 years. Neptune has many moons including Triton, Proteus and Nereid. It also has very faint rings.
9. What an experience that was! It felt pretty cold out there in space so I quickly turned up the heat when I changed into a newer type of heater that sounds like it could have been made in a kiln. What have I become?

Answer: Ceramic heater

A ceramic heater consists of ceramic plates and aluminum baffles. They are very easy to carry and give off a lot of heat from a small box. Ceramic heaters are energy efficient and safer than many other types of heaters. They also have plastic casings that stay cool.
10. I was all warmed up and thought about becoming something that goes great with coffee. You can make me as dark or as light as you want to. What am I now?

Answer: Toast

Toast is sliced bread that is heated and browned. You can toast any type of bread in a toaster, on a barbecue and even over a flame. There are a wide assortment of toppings that you can spread on toast to make it a tasty treat. Some of these spreads include jam, jelly, peanut butter, creamed cheese, butter and much more.
