The Edinburgh International Festival is an annual arts festival which first took place in 1947, and has been held every August since then, with the exception of 2020 when it was cancelled due to COVID. The Fringe takes place alongside the main festival, with over 3000 shows held each year, mainly in small venues.
2. Where in Edinburgh is the Scott Monument located?

Answer: Princes Street

The Scott Monument is an iconic Edinburgh landmark. Dedicated to the author Sir Walter Scott, it was completed in 1844, and is located on the south side of Edinburgh's main shopping thoroughfare, Princes Street. The monument is 200 feet high, and there are 287 steps to the top if you fancy climbing it.

Answer: HMY Britannia

The Royal Yacht Britannia was the official ship of the UK Royal Family. Launched in Clydebank, Scotland, in 1953, she sailed for over one million nautical miles before being decommissioned in 1997. She is now permanently berthed in Leith as a tourist attraction, with over 300,000 people visiting each year.

George Street is a shopping street which runs parallel to Princes Street in Edinburgh's New Town.

Answer: Murrayfield

Murrayfield Stadium is the home of the Scottish Rugby Union, and was opened in 1925. It had an all-seated capacity in 2022 of 67,144, although back in the days of terracing, much bigger crowds were accommodated, with 104,000 attending a Scotland v Wales match in 1975.
Easter Road is the home of Hibernian F.C., Tynecastle is home to Heart of Midlothian F.C., and Meadowbank stadium is a multi-sports venue which has twice hosted the athletics events of the Commonwealth Games.

The One O'Clock Gun is fired daily Monday to Saturday at 13.00 hours, but NOT on a Sunday. This dates back to 1861, when the gun was fired so that nearby ships at sea could reset their chronometers.

The town of Scone, near Perth, was an ancient capital of Scotland, and the town's abbey was the coronation site of Scottish monarchs. The Stone of Destiny is a sandstone block which was used during coronation ceremonies, and was stolen by soldiers of English King Edward I, and taken to London, in 1296. It was finally returned to Scotland in 1996, and resides in Edinburgh Castle.
8. Edinburgh Zoo is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the whole of Scotland. What daily event takes place there each afternoon?

Answer: Penguin Parade

Edinburgh Zoo opened in 1909 and attracts around 600,000 visitors each year. The penguin parade began by accident in 1950 when several birds escaped, and is now a must-see event for visitors each afternoon.
9. What type of public transport was introduced to Edinburgh in 2014?

Answer: Trams

Edinburgh had had a tramway system before, but this was done away with in 1956 because of the the increasing popularity of diesel buses at the time. In the late 1990s, the city council proposed reintroducing trams after seeing their popularity in other UK cities such as Manchester and Birmingham.

In 2014, after years of delays, and much over budget, the first new trams began operating between Edinburgh Airport and the city centre. Further extensions were planned for the early 2020s.

Answer: Usher Hall

The Usher Hall was opened in 1914 and has a capacity of 2,200. The hall is the home of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. In 1972, the Eurovision Song Contest was held there, with Vicky Leandros winning for Luxembourg. Away from music, the hall hosted the boxing events of the 1986 Commonwealth Games.
