1. A unique lift system was opened in 2002, to reconnect the Union Canal with the Forth and Clyde Canal. Can you tell me the name of it?

Answer: The Falkirk Wheel

The Falkirk Wheel was built as part of the UK's largest canal restoration project, and provides access for boats from the east to the west coast of Scotland. There is a height difference of around 115 feet where the two canals meet, and the lift allows travel from one to the other. The cost of the whole project was £84.5 million!
2. At Newtonmore, not far from Aviemore, is an indoor water, light and music show. What is it called?

Answer: Waltzing Waters

The Waltzing Waters show began in Newtonmore in 1990, and brings a lot of tourists to the area, which had become quiet after the A9 road had bypassed the village.
3. You can take a ferry or drive across the bridge to the Isle of Skye. Where does the ferry to Armadale sail from?

Answer: Mallaig

The Caledonian MacBrayne ferry sails from Mallaig. Mallaig was one Europe's busiest herring ports and is still a fishing town, with excellent shellfish. The prawns from here are delicious!

It is Dunvegan castle. The castle also provides a seal boat trip, and if you don't see any seals, they will refund the cost of the boat trip!
5. What is the name of Scotland's oldest distillery?

Answer: Glenturret

It is Glenturret in Perthshire, just outside the beautiful town of Crieff. Records show it was established as a distillery in 1775. Glenturret was home to a world famous cat, Towser, who appeared in the Guinness Book of Records, thanks to her mouse catching abilities!
6. On a stormy night in December 1879, a train travelling across a bridge fell into a river when the central section collapsed. Which river was it crossing?

Answer: Tay

It was the Tay River, the bridge being the first Tay rail bridge. The bridge was opened in 1878; only 19 months before the disaster which claimed the lives of everyone on board the train. The construction of the bridge was blamed for the tragedy.
William Topaz McGonagall, hailed writer of the worst poetry in the English Language, wrote one of his best known poems, "The Tay Bridge Disaster" about the tragedy.
7. Where would you find the Wallace Monument?

Answer: Stirling

The Wallace Monument, near Stirling, was build in the 1860s, as a tribute to Scotland's national hero - William Wallace - who fought for Scottish freedom in the 1290s.

It was Princess Margaret who was born here in 1930. The Queen's younger sister was the first baby in line to the British throne to be born in Scotland in 300 years. Glamis castle was the childhood home of the Queen Mother.
10. Where would you find the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses?

Answer: Fraserburgh
