The Roanoke colony was organized by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1585. It was located in what was to become colonial Virginia. Three years after the last shipment of supplies was sent to the colony, it vanished. It is still not known what became of the inhabitants of the colony.

The 'Invincible Armada' was sent by Philip II of Spain to overthrow Queen Elizabeth I of England, and to thwart English presence in the Spanish Netherlands. The Armada's presence in English waters resulted in the Battle of Gravelines, which the English won decisively.

The Armada achieved none of its aims and returned to Spain, badly battered and reduced. The fiasco resulted in severe blow to Spanish prestige, a huge increase in Spain's debts and left England relatively much more powerful in the Atlantic.
