Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If you are out fishing and throw some chum into the water, what are you doing?

Answer: Attracting other fish

Chum is chopped up fish used to attract the kind of fish you wish to catch. One can catch big fish or even pan fish if you use the right chum in the right place. In a few places, Chumming is illegal. It is virtually assured that when you use chum as bait, you will attract sharks due to their keen sense of smell.

2. Why do some people think that coriander (cilantro) leaves taste like soap?

Answer: A genetic variation

Some people have a genetic variant that affects an olfactory-receptor gene which is sensitive to aldehydes, chemicals involved in our sense of smell and taste. One result of the variant is that the people affected think coriander leaves taste like soap whereas most people think they add a taste to food that is similar to citrus.

The number of people affected varies between ethnic groups but in some areas over 20% of the population has the gene variation.

3. Which board game involves a person named Cavity Sam?

Answer: Operation

In Operation, the idea is to get objects out of a patient nicknamed Cavity Sam using a set of tweezers. This must be done without touching the patient which results in a buzzer sounding. Some pieces are Adam's apple, funny bone, charley horse, and spare rib. Others are humorously named such as brain freeze and writer's cramp.

In the game, players select a Doctor card which has an amount of money on it. That player wins money if they successfully remove a piece. If they fail, a person holding a Specialist card has an attempt. If that player is successful, they win double the amount. In the US version of the game, whoever has the most money wins. In the UK version, there is no money and whoever removes the most pieces win.

5. Who was the first identifiable living person depicted on a United States postage stamp?

Answer: Neil Armstrong

On 9/9/1969, the USPO issued as 10¢ Airmail issue depicting the 1st Moon Landing. (Scott Catalog #C76)

Until September 2011, the US Postal Service had a policy not allowing any living person to be featured on a postage stamp. The rule was bent for this historic issue with the justification that it was the Moon Landing that was being commemorated and Neil Armstrong was not named on the stamp itself. This reasoning was repeated several years later with the Celebrate the Century issues and a special Star Wars mini sheet issue.

6. On 13 September 2020, which Swiss company opened a 'Willy Wonka'-style chocolate museum at their factory premises in Kilchberg, Switzerland?

Answer: Lindt

The attraction, covering 5382 sq ft (500 sq m), has many tours (at various prices) covering the history of chocolate, where it's made, how Lindt makes it, plus the largest Lindt shop in the world. There are also opportunities to have a go at making chocolate yourself. Corporate events and private parties can also be hosted there.

Interestingly, the section on jobs is only in German, so I cannot tell if it would be a dream job. The wrong answers are/were all chocolate makers.

7. What do you have to do to mashed potatoes to make the dish, Duchess potatoes?

Answer: Bake them

The simple recipe is French in origin and dates back more than two hundred years. Add some egg, butter and some seasoning, mould it into a nice shape, and pop it in the oven until it turns golden. A tasty and inexpensive accompaniment to your roast dinner.
I have never tried ice cream and mashed potato, but it does not sound very appetising!

10. On which of the following UK takeaway menus would you likely NOT find a curry?

Answer: Kebab House

In Great Britain we love our takeaways! The obvious choice for a curry would be an Indian takeaway, where there are always a wide range available to suit (almost) all tastes. However, there is also normally a curry section on a Chinese takeaway menu. Chinese curry has a very different taste from Indian curries, and is flavoured with spices such as star anise, cloves and fennel.

Not quite as ubiquitous, but becoming more popular, are Thai takeaways which normally serve a range of dishes including red and green curries. Though it seems a little counter-intuitive, the green curry is the hotter of the two.

The classic Kebab House will normally offer an optional topping of chili sauce, but there's no curry to be found there. Question by player emiloony
