Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Hi! ElusiveDream here! To do this hobby, all I need is my imagination, a blank notebook and some pens that work. What's my hobby?

Answer: story-writing

Story-writing, particularly writing novels for children and young adults, has made some people very famous. Well-known authors include Dr. Seuss and J.K Rowling. I enjoy story-writing because it takes me to lots of wonderful and exciting fantasy worlds.
2. This is iheartpandas! My hobby involves collecting something shiny and grey. It has a curved shape, two holes, and it can be found on top of a soda can. What do I collect?

Answer: pull-tabs

Pull-tabs were invented by Ermal Fraze in 1959. I always had an interest for pull-tabs. I stopped collecting for a while, but now I have at least 40 tabs.
3. Hey, FrizzoLizzo here! For my favourite hobby, all you'll need is one needle, a canvas, and all the colours of thread that your heart desires. It's a craft skill that dates back hundreds of years, but it still remains as popular as ever, even with teenagers like me! What hobby of mine am I describing?

Answer: Cross-stitching

Uh-huh, I sure do love cross-stitching! It allows me the freedom to design anything I can think of and then stitch it on to a canvas, and the current pride of my collection is my James Bond cross stitch. If you've ever thought about taking up this fantastic craft, but never got around to doing so, I encourage you to give it a go!
4. Greetings, Ankhsunamun1 here. My favourite hobby requires a piece of technical equipment that comes in many shapes and sizes. Even though other things may need to be done later, the most significant action in this hobby takes less than a second. What do I enjoy?

Answer: photography

I really enjoy photography, and, with the new digital cameras, it is so much easier, although, I still enjoy the 'old-fashioned' way, of using film. It is so much harder now to get film developed!
5. It's iheartpandas again! Another hobby of mine is simple yet stimulating for my mind. All I need is me and some books. What is it?

Answer: reading

Books allow you to expand your reading and vocabulary skills. They allow you to use your imagination and go anywhere you want to. And with different genres and stories, there is something for everyone!
6. Hello, CindyK41 here! My favorite hobby requires acid free pages with a binder, a magnifying glass, hinges, and tiny little works of art from any country you wish (used or mint). What are these tiny works of art that you put on the upper right hand corner of envelopes?

Answer: postage stamps

Postage stamps were first used in 1840. I started stamp collecting at a young age. I ripped all the stamps of the mail we got, and asked all of my family to do the same. It is sad to say that the U.S postal service is struggling to stay in business. E-mail, and paying bills on-line has affected this business that started in 1775.
7. I'm kimbwitchn from the USA My hobby is collecting items that used to be common on dining tables in the US many years ago. They are usually made of glass but I also have a few that are silver. These were used to contain a common white condiment. I also collect the tiny utensils that were used to dispense this condiment. What is it that I collect?

Answer: salt dishes/salt spoons

Salt dishes come in many patterns and can be cut glass, pressed glass, or even glass with thumbprints on them. I have two that are sterling silver. The tiny spoons used to sprinkle the salt are often silver but can be other materials. Genuine antique salt dishes and spoons are getting hard to find!
8. ElusiveDream here again! I have a small collection of these things, which can tell us a lot about what life was like hundreds millions of years ago. What are they?

Answer: fossils

Fossils are the remains of prehistoric animals and plants preserved in rock. Among my fossil collection is a 165 million year old Ammonite (a type of shelled mollusc), a 110 million year old fish and a 450 million year old Trilobite (a type of crustacean).
9. Greetings - Saratogarox here. My favorite hobby involves utilitarian objects from primarily the 19th Century. These objects come in a multitude of colors and their contents were designed to be good for what ailed ye. They're made primarily of silica sand with some additives - the ones made today just have no character.

Answer: mineral water bottles

Mineral water springs were abundant in New York and the New England area from before the Civil War and were frequently bottled and sold to promote good health. The bottles were usually pints and quarts and in a widely varied spectrum from common aqua to blues, greens, yellows, black, brown and rarely some shades of red.

They are beautiful to sit in a window to allow the sun to shine through.
10. Hello, Tony_TV_King here. My favorite hobby includes little oddly shaped pieces that when fit together make a picture, usually a scenic one. The number of pieces included typically depends on the size of the finished object and the difficulty of assembling them. What is the name of my favorite hobby?

Answer: jigsaw puzzles

Jigsaw puzzles were originally just a painting on a piece of wood, which was then cut into pieces by a jigsaw. Around 1760, a London engraver decided to commercialize the idea, his name was John Spilsbury. In today's society many companies will turn any photo given to them into a jigsaw puzzle.

A report by the Alzheimer's Association of Canada reported that the brain is exercised when a jigsaw puzzle is done, and doing puzzles may help to prevent Alzheimer's Disease.
