1. Gazpacho (Spain)

Answer: Soup

Gazpacho (aka Gaspacho) is a soup that originated in the southern regions of Spain and Portugal. The name is believed to be an Arabic term meaning "soaked bread". Gazpacho is made with hardened bread, tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, red onions, garlic, vinegar, salt, pepper and olive oil.

There are some variants of gazpacho that include other ingredients as well. Unlike most other soup recipes, gazpacho is normally served cold.
2. Harira (Morocco)

Harira is a soup recipe that originated in Morocco, but is also popular in nearby Algeria as well, especially during Ramadan. The name is derived from the Arabic word harir which means "silk". The soup is made using flour, tomatoes, chickpeas, onions, olive oil and some meat (usually lamb, but beef and chicken can be used as well). Lentils are also used specifically in the Moroccan variety. Harira is often served with hard-boiled eggs and lemon juice.
3. Pho (Vietnam)

Pho is a Vietnamese soup consisting of rice noodles, a beef-based broth and various spices such as cilantro, basil and chili peppers. The word pho simply translates to "soup". Of course there are numerous variants of pho that use other meats and ingredients such as chicken, duck, eggs and bean sprouts. Pho is a relatively young dish having been invented in the early 20th century.
4. Ribollita (Italy)

Ribollita is a soup recipe that originated in the Tuscany region of Italy. It is normally made using hardened bread, cannellini beans, kale, carrots, celery, and various spices. The name of the soup simply translates to "re-boiled". The soup was traditionally made by peasants in Tuscany using leftovers and scraps from higher class people in the region.
5. Tacaca (Brazil)

Tacaca is a soup recipe that originated in northern Brazil. It is made with jambu (an herb native to the Amazon region), a special broth made with manioc (aka cassava / a root vegetable from which tapioca is made), yellow peppers and shrimp. Tacaca is traditionally served in bowls made of cuias (a type of squash native to Brazil).

Horiatiki is a Greek salad recipe. Its name simply translates to "peasant salad". It is made with tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, olives (and olive oil), salt, oregano and feta cheese. Some varieties of Horiatiki features additional ingredients such as pepperoncini, cucumbers and even fish such as anchovies and sardines.
7. Katzutz (Israel)

Katzutz (aka aravi or yerakot) is a type of salad native to Israel. Katzutz is traditionally made using tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, peppers and parsley. The name of the dish in Hebrew simply translates to "chopped salad".

Salade nicoise is a salad recipe native to southern France. The recipe was named after the city of Nice, where the dish is said to have been invented. Salade nicoise is normally comprised of tomatoes, olives, hard-boiled eggs and fish such as tuna or anchovies.

Shopska is a salad dish that is native to Bulgaria. It is very similar to Horatiki in that it is comprised of tomatoes, cucumbers and onions. However, shopska utilizes a slightly different type of goat cheese called sirene. The name of the salad comes from the Shopi region, which is located in western Bulgaria.
10. Tabbouleh (Lebanon)

Tabbouleh is a salad dish that is native to Lebanon and Syria. The name is derived from the Arabic word tabil, which means "seasoning". Tabbouleh is made using tomatoes, parsley, bulgur (cracked wheat), onions and mint. It is often served with olive oil and lemon juice.
11. Cachapas (Venezuela)

Cachapas are pancakes made out of corn. They are primarily found in Venezuela, where they are commonly served at street corners, though they are also found elsewhere where they are referred to by other names. Cachapas are often prepared with a filling of queso de mano (handmade cheese) which has a texture similar to mozzarella.
12. Ceviche (Peru)

Ceviche is an appetizer dish that originated in Peru, but it has become popular in other countries in Central and South America as well. Ceviche is raw fish that is prepared using a citrus-based marinade. A similar dish is believed to have been invented by Peruvian natives, but the current ceviche recipe became popular after the region was colonized by the Spanish in the 16th century.
13. Hawawshi (Egypt)

Hawawshi is an Egyptian appetizer. It is minced meat (usually ground beef) stuffed inside pita or baladi bread and is usually cooked with onion, pepper, parsley and sometimes hot chilies. Hawawshi is one of the youngest recipes in this quiz. It was invented in the early 1970s by an Egyptian street vendor by the name of Ahmed al-Hawawsh (after whom it was named for).
14. Jiaozi (China)

Answer: Starter

Jiaozi (aka dumplings or potstickers) are a Chinese appetizer. They normally consist of ground meat (beef or pork) and cabbage placed inside a flour dough shell, which are then steamed, boiled or fried. Jiaozi are often served with soy sauce for people to dip them in. Some historians believe they were named for their distinctive shape as the Chinese word jiao translated to "horn".
15. Okoy (Philippines)

Answer: Starter

Okoy (aka ukoy) is an appetizer dish that is native to the Philippines. It is comprised of calabaza (winter squash) and unshelled shrimp which is deep fried in a batter made from rice flour. It can also be made with various vegetables such as sweet potatoes, onions and carrots. Okoy is often served with a spicy vinegar-based sauce.
