Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If you want an obscure long-haul, you might take a flight from Condor Flugdienst, taking a journey over Greenland to Whitehorse in the Yukon. You'd get a ticket heading out from what city?

Answer: Frankfurt

Perhaps one of the weirder direct flights in the world, this flight taking passengers nearly ten hours up and through the Arctic Circle gets its guests into Whitehorse, deep in the northwest of Canada's remote territories. There are a few good reasons for this, and it actually has a lot to do with the ol' 'By Sea' option. Whitehorse is one of the more accessible cities for anyone travelling to Skagway, Alaska, and from there, passengers can embark on Alaskan cruises.

Nonetheless, it's an odd route, and one that started in the early 2000s, providing consistent flights to the Yukon and back for European travellers out of one of the EU's busiest airports during the summer. There is only one gate at Whitehorse's airport, so it's not easy to get lost.
2. Historically, there has been a consistently-operated Royal Air Force charter flight between Oxford, England and RAF Mount Pleasant in the Falklands. Where would passengers expect a layover on this odd route?

Answer: Ascension Island

You want remote? This small charter, generally of ten or less people, takes more than eighteen hours to get you to where you need to be. Operated solely through the Falkland Islands government facilities in London, it's generally been used by researchers or military personnel as it departs specifically from the RAF Brize Norton airfield in Oxford and heads to a similar airfield in South America all said and done. It's one of the only flights in the world that head to Mount Pleasant; the other goes to nearby Punta Arenas, Chile, one of the southernmost cities in the world.

Ascension Island is an interesting layover spot though, especially if you don't want to see anyone or do anything. A thousand miles from any continent it, too, was used as an airbase during WWII and the Falkland War. It is minimally populated and it's not the first place that comes to mind for 'destination travel'.
3. Let's look at short-haul flights. If you visit the Orkney Islands, you can take a flight from Westray to Papa Westray, and it would likely take how long?

Answer: A couple of minutes

Considered the shortest scheduled flight in the world, the Westray-Papa Westray route takes passengers a grand total of three kilometres from one Scottish island to the next, and because of the short distance, passengers are really only in the air for up to two minutes.

Historically subsidized by the Scottish government, the jaunt is a public service allowing locals to make their way to some of the Orkneys' key locations. It's a small plane, but a necessary mode of transport to allow people to visit and study local sites and to provide sometimes-critical health services to the citizens of both locations.
4. Thousands take flights to and from Ushuaia every year, but its connection to Teniente Rodolfo Marsh Martin Airport (IATA code TNM) brings passengers to one of the only airports in which hard-to-reach location?

Answer: Antarctica

Found on King George Island, Teniente Rodolfo Marsh Martin Airport is technically the northernmost official airport on the continent of Antarctica despite being one of the southernmost airports in the world. Generally visitors to this location are getting there from Ushuaia, Argentina or Punta Arenas, Chile, and many of them don't do so by plane. Instead, most guests to this spot are cruise-goers, encountering one of the world's more unique boating destinations.

Researchers would generally fly even further south. The Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, for instance, can be found at the South Pole and is accessible by planes flying into the Jack F. Paulus Skiway.
5. One of the highest airports in the world, Daocheng Yading Airport sends passengers to a runway more than 4.4 kilometres above sea level. Where is this airport?

Answer: China

Found in Sichuan Province in south-central China, Daocheng Yading Airport services a relatively small, high-altitude population located in the Hengduan Mountains. Generally only visited by Chinese airlines, it beats out the altitude of airstrips in places like Tibet (like Qamdo Bamda Airport and Rikaze Dingri Airport). Other countries with airports at high altitudes include Bolivia, Peru, and Nepal. El Alto International Airport, in La Paz, is actually the highest capital-serving airport in the world and it's at 4,061 kilometres in altitude.

Daocheng Yading Airport opened in 2013 and brings passengers to Yading and several of the Sacred Mountains of China. Before it opened, travellers would need to take a two day bus ride from Chengdu to reach their destination; now it takes about an hour.
6. Although it would take twenty-nine hours to drive between Bellingham and Skagway, taking the ferry would bypass which of these?

Answer: British Columbia

The trip in question is the lengthy route between Bellingham, Washington, and Skagway, Alaska, which brings American travellers from the continental U.S. all the way up to one of Alaska's more accessible entry points. The catch is that those proceeding on roads will need to pass up through the entirety of British Columbia, the westernmost Canadian province, to get there. The ferry is a lengthier trip by all means (sixty-nine hours, approximately), but it gives a look at a part of the world often unexperienced by travellers as the rugged coastline of B.C. gives way not only to rainforests, but eventually glaciers.

Those travelling on what's considered the Alaksan Marine Highway can also make an earlier stop about two-thirds of the way along the route in Ketchikan, a colourful southern Alaska town considered one of the wettest in the U.S. It's not particularly easy to get there without the use of a ferry.
7. The Star Ferry hosts one of the most famous chartered boat routes in the world. You can ride it in which city?

Answer: Hong Kong

Starting operations in 1888, the Star Ferry (formerly the Kowloon Ferry) has been an institution in Hong Kong's Victoria Harbour longer than most, acting as one of the main passenger modes of transport from Hong Kong Island to Kowloon. In the modern era the ferry is more of a nice-to-have as Hong Kong ended up growing to become one of the largest and most technologically advanced cities in East Asia; there are many ways across the harbour now.

This said, it's always provided a more cost-effective means for commuters and tourists to get around in this busy city.

It's certainly easier than a sampan!
8. The Øresund Bridge was created as a replacement for what was, at one time, the world's busiest ferry route. Opening in 2000, it bridged a gap between Malmö, Sweden and what Scandinavian capital?

Answer: Copenhagen

The Øresund Bridge replaced what was, at one time, the world's busiest ferry, instead allowing travellers to cross the eight kilometre stretch between Sweden and Denmark by car or train if they so chose (and connecting Scandinavia to the rest of Europe via more realistic means.

The Helsingør-Helsingborg ferry route, which crossed this strait at its narrowest, remained in service after the bridge's opening day as an alternative to paying higher tolls on the land route. The ride takes about twenty minutes to complete.
9. Starting in the 19th century, British Royal Mail Ships achieved designation by transporting large quantities of mail on oversea routes. Which of these was one of those ships?

Answer: The Titanic

The RMS Titanic is perhaps the most famous of the Royal Mail Ship line despite its sinking in 1912 on its maiden voyage. When designated with this prefix, ships in the fleet could indicate their service and, when not being used for this purpose, they would simply be prefixed as SS. The Titanic only flew under the RMS prefix as did most ships in the White Star Line fleet based out of Liverpool.

The other options here are part of the Carnival Cruise lines, a fishing boat (the Bluenose II), and a Royal Navy ship (the Beagle).
10. It takes twenty-one days to cruise from Puerto Williams, Chile to Cape Town, South Africa, but if you do you can hit which of these island ports, the most remote in the world, which can not be flown to?

Answer: Tristan da Cunha

The most remote island with permanent residents anywhere in the world, Tristan da Cunha is truly a getaway as far as getting away goes, though not a conventional vacation destination. For visitors, your options are limited; the island, British Overseas Territory, doesn't actually have a runway to facilitate travellers heading across the Atlantic by air, so your only real choice would be to cruise out. One option, taking passengers from the naval base at Puerto Williams, Chile to the southern tip of Africa, is a three-week-long straight shot across the ocean that also makes a stop at South Georgia and the Sandwich Islands.
