Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the man who designed the board game "Ticket to Ride"?

Answer: Alan R. Moon

"Ticket to Ride" is a railroad themed board game for 2-5 players. The game was designed by Alan R. Moon, who was born in Southampton, England in 1951. "Ticket to Ride" was first published in 2004 and has won several awards including the prestigious Spiel des Jahres, which is awarded in Germany. Alan R. Moon also has several other award-winning board games to his credit including "Airlines", which was published in 1990 and "Elfenland", which was published in 1998.
2. Which country does the original "Ticket to Ride" game map primarily focus on?

Answer: United States

Alan R. Moon moved to North America when he was five years old. He lived in Canada for a few years before immigrating to the United States and would later work for several American based board game companies including Parker Brothers. "Ticket to Ride" was first published by the American game company Days of Wonder, which became a subsidiary of the France-based board game company Asmodee in 2014.

The original game primarily focuses on building railroad lines across the United States and southern Canada.
3. How many colored train pieces does each player receive at the start of the game in the original "Ticket to Ride"?

Answer: 45

When a game of "Ticket to Ride" is started each player is given 45 colored train pieces, which they will use to claim rail lines. Each player can choose to play as one of five colors (green, red, blue, yellow and purple). During each player's turn, they will have an opportunity to either claim a route or draw cards, however they cannot do both in the same turn.

The game will end when a player has less than two train pieces left in their inventory, after which each person will get only one more chance to claim a route.
4. In "Ticket to Ride", each player is dealt three cards with two city names on them. What are these cards known as in the game?

Answer: Destination Tickets

At the start of "Ticket to Ride", each player is dealt three Destination Tickets. They must keep two of the cards, but may discard one that they do not want. Each Destination Ticket displays two cities that a player must try to link together using whatever route possible. If a player manages to successfully claim routes that connect both cities, then they will be awarded the point value indicated on the card.

However, if a player fails to complete a Destination Ticket, then those points will be deducted from their score at the end of the game.
5. Which color rail line in "Ticket to Ride" does NOT have a corresponding train card?

Answer: Grey

In "Ticket to Ride", rail lines are claimed by collecting train cards. There are eight different colors (black, white, red, green, blue, yellow, purple and orange) and each color depicts a certain type of rail car. There are also multi-colored locomotive wild cards.

At the start of the game, each player is dealt four train cards. Five cards are then drawn and placed face-up in a common area. During their turn, a player can either select or draw either two color cards or one wild card. A colored route can only be claimed when a player has enough cards of the same color to match its length. Grey routes are not restricted by any one color and can be claimed by anyone as long as they have enough cards of the same color in their hands.
6. At the end of the game in "Ticket to Ride", how many bonus points is awarded to the player with the Longest Continuous Route?

Answer: 10

The main objective in "Ticket to Ride" is simply to score the most points by the end of the game. Points are awarded for each rail line claimed, with point values varying based on the length of the route. As stated earlier, points are added and/or subtracted by completing/not completing the Destination Tickets.

In addition, the player who is able to create the Longest Continuous Route is awarded a special card worth 10 points.
7. A European version of "Ticket to Ride" was released a year after the original. Other than the location, is this version played exactly the same way.

Answer: No

"Ticket to Ride: Europe" was released in 2005. It plays very similar to the original, but does have several differences. Train stations were added to the game and can be claimed by any player as long as no rail lines leading into the city have been claimed by another player. Stations allow the owning player to utilize someone else's train line to help build their route.

The European version also adds ferry lines and tunnels to the game. These make the game a little more challenging than the original as it forces players to have to draw the wild locomotive cards in order to claim them.
8. What famous railroad was featured in an expansion pack for "Ticket to Ride: Europe"?

Answer: Orient Express

In 2015, an expansion pack named "Orient Express" was released for use with "Ticket to Ride: Europe". The real Orient Express began operating in 1883 and eventually expanded to cover the entire continent of Europe from London, England down to Istanbul, Turkey. Sadly, the Orient Express ceased operations in 2009, but a luxury scenic rail company named the Venice-Simplon Orient Express provides private service utilizing the original routes.
9. In 2016, a version of "Ticket to Ride" was released that added another form of transportation to the game. What was it called?

Answer: Rails & Sails

In 2016, Days of Wonder released a variant of "Ticket to Ride" that featured rail lines from across the entire globe. In addition, ocean lines were added to the game which allowed players to expand their routes across the seas and connect them to other continents.

This version was given the subtitle "Rails & Sails". In this version there are only six different color train cards, however the game added ship cards in those same colors.
10. Which of these is a version of "Ticket to Ride" designed exclusively for younger players?

Answer: First Journey

"Ticket to Ride: First Journey" was also released in 2016. It featured a more simpler game design geared towards young children. At first, "Ticket to Ride: First Journey" was made exclusively to be sold by the American retail giant Target, however the version would eventually make its way to other stores as well such as Amazon and Walmart.
