Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Adz

Answer: A tool with an arched blade

An adz, also spelled "adze", is a hand tool used for shaping wood. Its blade has a curve unlike that of a traditional axe, and the blade on the end of the curve sits perpendicular to the handle. It was originally used in the Stone Ages. Its etymology is debated but it has been seen in variations in Old English writings of the seventeenth century.

It would be worth 13 points in "Scrabble". A=1, D=2, Z=10
2. Zuz

Answer: An ancient Hebrew coin

The word "zuz" means "to move" in Hebrew and this makes sense as coins like a zuz move from person to person in transactions. It's a silver coin, one fourth of a silver shekel. It would be worth 21 points in "Scrabble" but since there is only one "Z" you'd have to use a blank tile and only get 11 points. Z=10, U=1, Blank = 0
3. Fez

Answer: A brimless cap

A fez is typically worn by men in Middle Eastern countries. It looks like a bucket with a black tassel coming out of it. There is a city in Morocco named Fez which could be the origin of the name. It's worth 15 points in "Scrabble". F=4, E=1, Z=10
4. Qi

Answer: A Chinese philosophy about circular life force

Qi is the general belief of vital energy living inside of our body. Acupuncturists base their practice on qi. Its origin is from Mandarin Chinese which translates to "breath". It's the shortest acceptable word in "Scrabble" using a Q. Q=10, I=1
5. Qadi

Answer: A judge

Qadi describes the magistrate of a court. Its use is primarily with Muslim officials appointed by their government to interpret Muslim law. Its value is 14 points in "Scrabble". Q=10, A=1, D=2, I=1
6. Jeu

Answer: A game

The French word "Jeu" is an approved "Scrabble" word and simply means "a game" in English. If you see this word in the game, you might want to add an "X" to it. Jeux is the approved plural for jeu and worth 18 points! J=8, E=1, U=1 and if you made "jeux" you'd add X =8
7. Jun

Answer: A North Korean money unit

It would take one hundred jun to make up one won. What is a won? A won is the basic unit of money used in both North and South Korea. You would earn 10 points for this word in "Scrabble". J=8, U=1, N=1
8. Sox

Answer: Plural of sock

When you see a major league baseball team like the Boston Red Sox, you might assume "sox" is an abbreviation for socks and abbreviations are not allowed in "Scrabble". But sox is an approved plural of sock, coming from the Middle English word "sok" and also from the Latin root of "soccus". It is worth 10 points in "Scrabble". S=1, O=1, X=8
9. Vex

Answer: Frustrated or worried

To vex is to cause unnecessary concern and stress about trivial matters. Being able to combine a "V" with an "X" is a great move in "Scrabble" and worth 13 points. V=4, E=1, X=8
10. Xi

Answer: 14th letter of the Greek alphabet

In the Greek alphabet, which starts alpha, beta, gamma, it goes on and includes kappa, lambda, mu, nu, xi, and omicron as letters 10-15. Xi is the shortest word allowed in "Scrabble" for which "X" is the first letter. It would earn you only 9 points, but could be very strategic using the letters in this order. X=8, I=1
