Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Oh Peter! I'm so in love...but he doesn't know I love him. He's so academic and clever he can't seem to compute anything emotional. It's so frustrating! I've just professed my love to another man, but I don't love Freddie at all! What should I do?" Which European musical character is the centre of this love triangle?

Answer: Eliza Doolittle

Eliza Doolittle's paramour is her teacher and benefactor, Professor Henry Higgins. Higgins is so caught up in his world of phonetics and academia and, really, his own achievements that the growing affection of the heroine of "My Fair Lady" by Lerner and Loewe goes unnoticed until it appears she will wed Freddie, whom Higgins believes to be a fop and unsuitable for her.

At the end of the musical, all is resolved, and after getting engaged to Freddie, Eliza moves to Mrs Higgins' house and then back to Professor Higgins, where she professes her love for him and he accepts her back.
2. "Russia is going to the dogs! Eva, it will be much better when we have democracy and freedom for the people. I, a lowly school teacher, am destined to help in the fight for a better Russia. I don't care if I am imprisoned, it is the right thing to do. But, Eva, do you think I should ask her to marry me before I go or once we have got the ideal Russia?" Which of the male characters from "The Fiddler on the Roof" is this politically minded?

Answer: Perchik

In Bock and Harnick's "Fiddler on the Roof", Perchik, a nomadic school teacher, arrives in Anatevka and is invited by Tevye to tutor his five daughters, of whom Tzeitel is the eldest. Tzeitel is about to be proposed to by the elderly Lazar Wolf, whom she does not wish to marry. Perchik falls in love with the second eldest sister, Hodel, who is very intelligent and an avid book reader.

He has very strong political motivations, so when he leaves for Kiev, to take part in the marches against the government, she is left behind only with the promise that one day they will marry.

He is put in prison, so she leaves home to be with him and marry him in the prison.
3. Which lady with an unfortunate skin condition thinks this? "Robert, I am in such a quandary. I am ugly and at school nobody likes me, but I'm dying to meet this powerful, magical guy, who will change my life forever! There's this girl here who really wants to be like me, but she's always so horrible to me, despite being my room-mate! Oh well, I think I'll take her to the city anyhow! Nice chatting, Robert,"

Answer: Elphaba

Elphaba is the heroine in the musical "Wicked" based on the book by Gregory Maguire, which tells the story of "The Wizard of Oz" from the evil witch's perspective and with a back-story. Elphaba is born green because of her mother having an affair with a magic man, who turns out to be the wizard whom Elphaba is so keen to meet until she finds out he's been silencing all the creatures of Oz. Galinda (later shortens her own name to Glinda) is her unwilling room-mate, who only begins to like Elphaba after they both learn magic. Fun fact: Elphaba is thus named because the three syllables sound out the name of the author of the original "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz", L. (El) Frank (Pha) Baum (Ba).
4. "Gloria, Gloria, Gloria...isn't life just beautiful! This place is gonna get better and better. I've got a wife now, I'm not going to jail, life can not get better. Answer: Curly

This is the ending of the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical "Oklahoma!", where Curly marries Laurie after killing Judd. Judd, the farmhand, was unhealthily infatuated with Laurie but she was scared of him because he kept pornographic images of women in the smokehouse.

After she fires Judd for trying to assault her, she finds comfort in Curly's arms, and they agree to get married. Judd comes to their wedding and attacks Curly with a knife. He eventually falls on his own knife, but not wanting to put a man away on his wedding night, the men of the town enact an illegal trial that finds Curly not guilty of murder. Thus, Curly and Laurie get their happy ending.
