"The Thirteen Problems" by Agatha Christie Quiz

Raymond West, Miss Marple's nephew, decides to create a club. Each person in the club must tell a mystery story, to which only they know the answer, and the other members have to figure it out. The storyteller can change names. There is Raymond himself (a writer), Joyce Lempriére (an artist), Sir Henry Clithering (until lately Commissioner of Scotland Yard), Dr Pender (elderly clergyman of the parish), Mr Petherick (the solicitor) and finally Miss Marple.

In "The Tuesday Night Club", Sir Henry tells the story of a Mrs Jones who dies from food poisoning, but all is not what it seems. Miss Marple solves the mystery with the mention of "Hundreds and Thousands".

Doctor Pender tells the story of a mysterious party at Silent Grove. Nearby is an archaeological dig. Astarte was the Goddess of the Moon.

During the fancy dress party, the party go into the nearby woods. There, one of the members pretends to be Astarte, and Sir Richard Haydon, the owner of Silent Grove, is killed.

Raymond West tells the story of a Spanish galleon, wrecked off the Cornwall coast, which was carrying ingots of gold. While Raymond is staying with Newman, Newman is kidnapped and tied up. Miss Marple solves the story when she hears of the local gardener working on a Bank Holiday Monday.

Joyce Lempriére tells a story of a painting holiday she spent in Cornwall. While she is there, a married couple meet up with a lady friend of the husband. Later, one of the women is found drowned. It turns out that the man had insured the life of his wife, and he and his friend had murdered his wife, pretending she had drowned.

His friend was really his real wife, but they had done the same trick several times until Joyce alerted the local police.

Answer: Pneumonia

Mr Petherick tells the tale of wealthy Simon Clode who plans to leave money to American mediums. The mediums are in touch with Simon's granddaughter. His family are against this, but when the will is opened, there is just a blank piece of paper. Miss Marple solves the story, be telling them a game of her childhood.

Answer: Doctor Rawlinson

Doctor Haydock is the local Doctor in Saint Mary Mead. Miss Marple tells the story of her niece, Mabel. Mabel was married, but not very happy living with her husband, Geoffrey, and her husband's father. Mr Denman senior is ill; his mind is wandering. Mabel is under suspicion when her husband dies suddenly.

He tried to tell the cook something before he died. There is gossip, as Mabel has recently brought arsenic from the chemist. Miss Marple helps clear her name. She gets divine inspiration when she looks in the fishmongers' window.

"The Tuesday Night Club" moves to Gossington Hall, the home of Colonel Bantry and his wife, Dolly. The members of the "Tuesday Night Club" are Colonel and Mrs Bantry, Miss Marple, Henry Clithering, Jane Helier (the actress) and elderly Doctor Lloyd. Colonel Bantry tells of the mysterious death of the invalid Mrs Pritchard, and how her husband is suspected.

Answer: Blue primrose

Mrs Pritchard was always keen on fortune telling and Zarinda said that to be beware of the full moon and that blue flowers are fatal to her. She said the blue primrose means warning, blue hollyhocks mean danger while the blue geranium means death. Mrs Pritchard had flowered wallpaper and surprisingly, there is a blue primrose on the full moon, which wasn't there before.

When the next full moon appears there is a blue hollyhock on the wallpaper. And finally, on the next occurrence of the full moon, Mr Pritchard comes into his wife's bedroom and finds her dead. On the wallpaper is a blue geranium, which wasn't there before. Miss Marple solves the puzzle by the mention of gas, and how Mrs Pritchard had regular different nurse attendants.

Doctor Lloyd tells the story of a suspicious drowning while he was on holiday. A woman and her companion are on holiday in the same area as Doctor Lloyd, and the companion drowns. Miss Marple easily solves this mystery.

Sir Henry tells the story of Doctor Rosen. Doctor Rosen at one time had been very prominent in the Secret Service. He left Germany and came to live in England. He lived there with his niece, an old German servant, a gardener and his secretary. His secretary was employed by Sir Henry to keep an eye on Doctor Rosen. Doctor Rosen fell down the stairs and died. One of the four suspects, who lived with Doctor Rosen, must had done it. Miss Marple solves the story with the language of flowers, with a little help from Mrs Bantry.

Answer: A septic finger

Miss Marple tells the story of when she stayed at a Hydro (nowadays it would be called a health farm). There had been two unexpected deaths, the maid and the hall porter who died of pneumonia. All the old woman there expect a third death and they are not disappointed A married woman, who is holidaying with her husband is found dead in her bedroom.

Answer: Clodderham Court

The other places are made up, except for Old Hall, which is mentioned in "The Murder at the Vicarage". Mrs Bantry tells the story of a dinner party, when the ducks are accidentally stuffed with foxglove rather than sage and onion. Lots of people are ill but Sir Ambrose's ward dies. Miss Marple knows who the murderer is immediately.

Answer: Emeralds

Jane Helier, the actress, tells the story of a "friend" who is mixed up in a burglary. But it is obvious to the other members of the Tuesday Night Club, that this "friend" is really Jane, herself. A man comes to see Jane Helier, at her bungalow, to show her his play but someone pretends to be Jane, and puts a sleeping pill in a cocktail, and gives it to the man. Later, the jewels are taken, and the man is under suspicion. Surprisingly, Miss Marple can not solve this mystery, but gives Jane some whispered advice before going home. Jane admits to Mrs Bantry that she planned to carry out the burglary what she mentioned, in her story, but Miss Marple has made her think differently.

Answer: The Blue Boar

Sir Henry is staying with Colonel and Mrs Bantry, when there is an unexpected death in Saint Mary Mead. The local innkeeper's daughter, who was expecting a baby, drowns. Miss Marple is very concerned by this and writes down on a piece of paper the person who she thinks committed the murder, and Sir Henry can not help investigating. Miss Marple is right, as usual.
