Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Starring Kevin Costner, what 2001 film features a convention of Elvis impersonators as the backdrop to a story about a group of ex-cons planning to rob a casino?

Answer: 3000 Miles to Graceland

The film's tagline is "Crime is King". It also stars Kurt Russell and Christian Slater. Kurt Russell previously portrayed Elvis Presley in John Carpenter's television movie "Elvis" in 1979.
2. In 2002, an animated movie was released about a little girl living in Hawaii who gets a new "dog". She dresses her small blue pet as Elvis and encourages him to act like Elvis as well. What is the name of this Disney film?

Answer: Lilo and Stitch

Stitch is actually an alien who is mistaken for a dog and taken to the local pet shelter where he is purchased by Lilo. A great fan of Elvis, Lilo dresses her new dog in a white jacket and gives him a ukelele to play. "You're the Devil in Disguise" is among the Elvis tunes included in the soundtrack.
3. "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind", released in 2002, is a memoir of a game show host/CIA assassin and includes a scene with an Elvis impersonator performing on "The Gong Show". Who is this game show host?

Answer: Chuck Barris

The film was directed by George Clooney, who also has a starring role. In addition, it starred Drew Barrymore and Julia Roberts, while Sam Rockwell took on the part of Barris. Rockwell was chosen in part because of his resemblance to Chuck Barris. Due to the film's low budget, both Roberts and Barrymore reduced their normal pay rate as a favor to Clooney. Similarly, Matt Damon and Brad Pitt make unpaid cameo appearances.
4. David Lynch co-wrote and directed a movie in 1990 about a young couple who must deal with a number of killers and kidnappers sent after them by the young woman's mother. What is this movie that cast Nicolas Cage as an Elvis-obsessed fan who tries to emulate his idol?

Answer: Wild at Heart

The movie also stars Laura Dern and Diane Ladd. Cage sings "Love Me Tender" to Dern at the end of the film. In addition to Elvis, the movie also has several references to "The Wizard of Oz".
5. "Memphis Rising: Elvis Returns" is a 2011 science fiction movie in which Elvis didn't die as we all thought. What happened to him instead?

Answer: he was taken to another galaxy to live on an alien planet

This low budget film proposes that after spending 30 years on another planet, Elvis returns for a short visit home. Upon returning to Earth, Elvis doesn't want to be recognized so he poses as his own impersonator and enters an Elvis tribute contest. One of Elvis' body guards, Sonny West, appears in the film as himself and is also credited as technical advisor.
6. In what 1998 movie did Harvey Keitel's character believe that he was Elvis Presley and that he had faked his own death in 1977?

Answer: Finding Graceland

This film also stars Johnathon Schaech as a man who embarks on a cross country drive to Memphis where he can visit Graceland. Along the way he picks up a man who claims to be Elvis on his way back home to Memphis. Bridget Fonda portrays a Marilyn Monroe impersonator in the film. Priscilla Presley is credited as an executive producer. Harvey Keitel provides an entertaining rendition of "Suspicious Minds".
7. Judy Davis starred in this 1987 film about a back-up singer for an Elvis impersonator who is fired from her job. What is the name of this Australian movie? (Think: raise the water.)

Answer: High Tide

This is an independent film directed by Gillian Armstrong. It won seven AFI Awards in 1987.
8. In 2002, "Bubba Ho-Tep" was released, telling the story of Elvis Presley as an old man who now lives in a nursing home. How had Elvis disguised himself to avoid being recognized following his supposed death?

Answer: he took on the persona of an Elvis impersonator

The film stars Bruce Campbell as Elvis and Ossie Davis, whose character claims to be John F. Kennedy. This is actually billed as a horror comedy, as the two main characters are battling an Egyptian mummy who is nicknamed "Bubba Ho-Tep" by Elvis.
9. What 1992 movie starring Nicolas Cage included a scene with a group of Flying Elvises skydiving?

Answer: Honeymoon in Vegas

The movie was released in 1992 and also stars James Caan and Sarah Jessica Parker. Bruno Mars has a small part as a young child impersonating Elvis Presley at a convention in Las Vegas. The story revolves around a young couple who plan to marry during their trip to Vegas until another visitor in town sees a resemblance to his late wife in the woman, and begins to cause problems.
10. In what 1999 movie does Jim Carrey portray Andy Kaufman impersonating Elvis?

Answer: Man on the Moon

"Man on the Moon" is a biographical version of Andy Kaufman's life from his childhood and early appearances on "Saturday Night Live" until his death. The title of this film references an R.E.M. song of the same name that mentions Kaufman. Many of Kaufman's fans believed the reports of his death in 1984 to be a gag, reminiscent of the stories that circulated for years after Elvis Presley's death that he hadn't really died.
