Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Chicago cops, Danny and Ray (Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines), went to Key West on vacation, in "Running Scared" (1986). What happened while they were there?

Answer: They bought a bar and decided to retire from the force.

Danny and Ray had been working to bring down drug kingpin, Julio Gonzales (Jimmy Smits), but kept getting foiled one way or another. At one point, their captain said they were getting burned out and ordered them to take a vacation. The guys grudgingly went to Key West but soon started having fun (their various activities were shown in a montage accompanied by the song "Sweet Freedom").

They enjoyed themselves so much that Danny convinced Ray to buy a bar together and retire from the force. Going back to Chicago with plans to give notice, Danny and Ray were soon swept back in to the search for Julio.
2. "Where the Boys Are '84", about four young women going to Ft. Lauderdale for spring break, was an updated remake of a 1960 movie called "Where the Boys Are".

Answer: True

The earlier movie was entitled "Where the Boys Are". It featured Dolores Hart, Yvette Mimieux, Paula Prentiss and Connie Francis (who also sang the movie's theme song) as the four co-eds who went to Ft. Lauderdale for spring break. The guys they met were played by George Hamilton, Rory Harrity, Jim Hutton and Frank Gorshin. "Where the Boys Are '84" (1984) starred Lisa Hartman, Lorna Luft, Wendy Schaal and Lynn-Holly Johnson as the four college girls looking to have a good time in Florida over spring break.
3. The owners of an android, in need of a public-friendly image, hired Frankie Stone's Miami PR firm to teach him social skills. Which 1980s movie was this?

Answer: Making Mr. Right

The android, Ulysses, responded well to Frankie and even began having human emotions. Seeing in him all the qualities she had been looking for in a man but could never find, Frankie inevitably found herself falling in love with Ulysses. The movie, from 1987, starred Ann Magnuson as Frankie, with John Malkovich playing Ulysses and Dr. Jeff Peters, the creator of the android.
4. Maggie Feller (Cameron Diaz) discovered that a relative she had long thought dead was actually living in Florida. In the movie "In Her Shoes" (2005), what relation was this person to Maggie?

Answer: Grandmother

Unlike her lawyer sister Rose (Toni Collette), Maggie had no goals in life other than partying. One day while looking for cash in her father's desk, Maggie discovered a stack of birthday cards from her grandmother, Ella (Shirley MacLaine), which had been kept from her.

After Rose kicked Maggie out, Maggie was planning to go to New York, but instead decided to go to Delray Beach, Florida to see her grandmother. Although originally only going there to get money from her, Maggie instead learned how to care about and give back to others, thanks to Ella and her friends.
5. In "Some Like it Hot" (1959), two musicians, Joe and Jerry, had to get out of Chicago in a hurry after witnessing mob crimes. Luckily for them, they managed to join a band which was just leaving for Florida. What was unusual about this band?

Answer: It was an all girl band.

Desperate to leave the city, Joe and Jerry took the job, becoming Josephine and Daphne. Both men were attracted to the band's singer, Sugar Kane, but it was Joe who wooed her by impersonating a millionaire named Junior. Daphne, meanwhile, had a suitor of her, um, his own in wealthy Osgood Fielding, who eventually proposed marriage. "Some Like it Hot" was directed by Billy Wilder and starred Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, Marilyn Monroe and Joe E. Brown.

In the movie the band traveled to Miami, but the entire film was shot in California.
6. After leaving home, Frank Abagnale, Jr.'s escapades took him to various places, in "Catch Me if You Can" (2002). Which of these events took place in Florida?

Answer: Frank eluded Hanratty at the airport and left the country.

After learning of his parents' divorce, teen-aged Frank left home and began a life of impersonation and check fraud, eventually garnering the attention of a federal agent named Carl Hanratty. Frank was in Louisiana at his engagement party when Carl arrived to arrest him. Before escaping out the window, Frank asked his fiancee, Brenda, to meet him at Miami International Airport in a couple of days. When she arrived, Frank was disappointed to find that Brenda had told the FBI of his plans. Needing a diversion to get through the airport, Frank recruited several young women as stewardess trainees. The agents, who were busy looking at the ladies, didn't notice Frank in his pilot uniform as he walked by. Frank also visited Miami earlier, when he deadheaded on a TWA flight. The "Miami International Airport" scenes were actually filmed at Ontario Airport near Los Angeles, California.

Frank's arrest took place in Montrichard (filmed in Canada), he outsmarted Hanratty at the Tropicana in Hollywood, and he met Brenda while impersonating a doctor in Atlanta (the last two were filmed in California).
7. In what kind of setting did a good part of "The Champ" (1979) take place?

Answer: Horse track

A former boxer, Billy Flynn now trained horses for a living, but barely made enough to raise his young son, TJ. Devoted to his dad, TJ often had to be the adult due to Billy's drinking and irresponsible ways. A chance meeting with his mom caused a lot of confusion for TJ, who had been told by Billy that she was dead. For Billy, seeing Annie again reignited his love for her, but also helped him to realize he had to better himself, which included a return to the boxing ring. Jon Voight, Ricky Schroder and Faye Dunaway starred in "The Champ".

The horse track scenes were filmed in Hialeah, Florida.
8. After they ran out of gas in Florida, Toby Kwimper and his family set up a shelter nearby. Even though officials tried to get the squatters to leave the property, the Kwimpers decided this was where they were going to live. What singer played Toby in 1962's "Follow that Dream"?

Answer: Elvis Presley

The Kwimpers became stranded after Pop (Arthur O'Connell) drove down a stretch of closed roadway. Finding out they could legally homestead on the land, they battled government officials and local mobsters for their right to stay on the property. Elvis also sang several songs in the movie, including the title song "Follow that Dream".

The movie was filmed in Crystal River, Yankeetown, Ocala and Inverness, Florida. "Follow that Dream" was based on Richard P. Powell's novel "Pioneer, Go Home".
9. When the brand new freeway which ran right past the town of Ticlaw didn't include an exit for them, Ticlaw took matters into its own hands. Is this the correct plot for "Honky Tonk Freeway" (1981)?

Answer: Yes

Despite the fact that the freeway ran right past the town, Ticlaw was told that it was too small for an exit. So after bribes and putting up billboards on the freeway didn't work, the mayor (William Devane) and citizens of Ticlaw decided to make their own exit ramp. Meanwhile, a variety of travelers from different places were on their way to Florida.

These included a couple of bank robbers from New York, a couple of nuns, a woman from Paducah, and a family in an RV. All of these people were just about to pass Ticlaw when the Mayor's latest plan to get freeway traffic to the town was implemented. Everyone ended up spending an enjoyable night in Ticlaw and the state officials agreed to see things Ticlaw's way.

The movie starred Beau Bridges, Beverly D'Angelo, Geraldine Page, Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy. Look for Peter Billingsley playing the son of Howard Hesseman and Teri Garr a couple of years before he played Ralphie in "A Christmas Story".
10. A group of Angel Beach teenagers took revenge on a nearby bar owner after he failed to give them what they paid for. Which 1982 movie was this?

Answer: Porky's

In the 1950s, a group of high schoolers planned a big night at a local bar but ended up being humiliated by the owner of Porky's. With the help of a teacher, the police, and even the school's band, the group eventually got even with their nemesis. Filming of the movie took place in Ft. Lauderdale and Miami Beach. "Porky's" was followed by two sequels, "Porky's II: The Next Day" (1983) and "Porky's Revenge" (1985).
