Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The card in the envelope for Best Animated Feature said that the Oscar goes to "Wreck-It Ralph". Which film should have been in the envelope?

Answer: Brave

The Disney movie about a strong curly redheaded princess was in fact the winner. 2013 was the twelfth year that a Best Animated Feature Oscar statue was awarded. Disney/Pixar has won seven of twelve times.
2. The envelope for Best Writing Original Screenplay said that the winner was Quentin Tarantino for "Zero Dark Thirty". What was wrong with this envelope?

Answer: Quentin Tarantino wrote "Django Unchained"

Tarantino also won the Best Original Screenplay award for "Pulp Fiction" in 1995. He has been nominated twice for Best Director -- for "Inglourious Basterds" in 2012 and for "Pulp Fiction" in 1995.
3. John Williams and Alfred Newman are the most nominated Oscar film score composers so nobody was surprised when the envelope said the award goes to Thomas Newman. This was wrong. Who really won?

Answer: Mychael Danna for "Life of Pi"

Mychael Danna studied music at the University of Toronto. He also did the score for the film "Moneyball". Other films for which he composed include "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus", "Monsoon Wedding", and "Antwone Fisher".

Thomas Newman is the son of Alfred Newman. Their family has a long tradition of composing. Randy Newman is also part of their family.
4. According to the envelope, the recipient for Best Song was Mychael Danna for "Pi's Lullaby". Was this correct?

Answer: No

Mychael Danna may have won Best Score for "Life of Pi" but the best original song award went to "Skyfall" from the James Bond movie of the same name. It was written by Adele Adkins and Paul Epworth and performed at the award ceremony by Adele herself.
5. The envelope for Best Supporting Actor named Alan Arkin for his performance in "Argo". This was wrong. Can you correct the problem?

Answer: Christoph Waltz won for "Django Unchained"

Christoph Waltz won out from a very distinguished group of nominees. Three are previous recipients of the Best Supporting Actor Oscar: Waltz for "Inglourious Basterds", Arkin for for "Little Miss Sunshine," and Jones for "The Fugitive." The other two previously won as Best Lead Actors in films based on the lives of real people: De Niro (as boxer Jake LaMotta) in "Raging Bull" and Hoffman (as Truman Capote) for "Capote".
6. The envelope confusion continued as the award for Best Actress said it was a tie between Quvenzhané Wallis and Emmanuelle Riva. Who really won?

Answer: Jennifer Lawrence for "Silver Linings Playbook"

Jennifer Lawrence's performance was acknowledged with a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Critic's Choice Movie Award. The envelope stuffer clearly was distracted by the 76 year age differential between the two nominees in the envelope. Rivas was born in 1927 and Wallis was born in 2003.
7. The Best Director award envelope was wrong too. It had a card celebrating the work of Steven Spielberg in "Lincoln". Who really won?

Answer: Ang Lee for "Life of Pi"

Ang Lee previously won both the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film ("Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" in 2000) and "Brokeback Mountain" (2005).
8. When it came to the Best Supporting Actress presentation, the envelope declared Anne Hathaway to be the winner for her role as Fantine in "Les Miserables". Was this wrong too?

Answer: No

There was actually correct information in the envelope! Anne Hathaway received the award over competition from Amy Adams ("The Master"), Sally Field ("Lincoln"), Helen Hunt ("The Sessions"), and Jacki Weaver ("Silver Linings Playbook").
9. The award for Best Actor envelope recognized Hugh Jackman from "Les Miserables". As the former Oscar host bounded up toward the stage, the production was stopped to correct the error. Who was really recognized?

Answer: Daniel Day Lewis for "Lincoln"

The award to Daniel Day Lewis (his third golden statue for his best performance in a leading role) made him the first person to win three Best Actor Awards. His previous Oscars were presented for "There Will Be Blood" in 2007 and "My Left Foot" in 1989.
10. When it came time to announce the Best Picture Award, Michelle Obama beamed in from the White House, opened her envelope and announced that the winner was "Lincoln". Which film should have been in the envelope?

Answer: Argo

This was the first time in Oscar history that a First Lady had been a presenter.
