"The Creeping Terror" - The Worst Movie of 1964 Quiz

"The Creeping Terror" is one of my favorite treks into shadenfrude ... a movie so bad that it is fascinating to watch. Here's probably the only quiz you'll ever see about this film.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What California county provided the setting for "The Creeping Terror"?

Answer: Angel County

Director Arthur Nelson (who also starred under the name of Vic Savage) set the movie in a nondescript area of Simi Valley, though writer Alan Silliphant wanted to have the movie set around Lake Tahoe.

Supposedly, the original soundtrack to the movie did make it to the bottom of Lake Tahoe, as the urban legend goes, which was why the majority of the movie is narrated.
2. Who was the first person to spot the alien spacecraft?

Answer: Jeff Peters

Jeff Peters, the county forest ranger, was the first man to sight the rocket, reporting it to the sheriff's department as a plane crash near Willow Creek (a supposition that was later used by the military as the cover story for the situation).
3. What eminent facility had Dr. Bradford been assigned to before being called in on the spacecraft landing?

Answer: Jodrell Banks Radio Observatory

Dr. Bradford took charge of the situation and the investigation, much to the chagrin of Martin, the acting sheriff. Colonel James Caldwell was in charge of the special military unit assigned to the case, working under Bradford.
4. What event was occurring at Mungreeve Park when the monster attacked and ate a bunch of neighbors?

Answer: A hootenanny

The giant carpet-like monster showed it was very resilient, able to withstand being battered by a guitar. Through bad editing, the instrument showed up whole again after being smashed to bits against the creature's hide.
5. What was the name of the young boy who was fishing with his grandfather, only to be chomped down by the Creeping Terror?

Answer: Bobby

The grandfather, Mr. Brown, searched for Bobby for a near-interminable length of time before the monster nabbed him too and ate his rotundness up.
6. While the Monster did kill and eat quite a few people, perhaps the most uncomfortable moment in the film involved a mother and her baby. What item did Betty Johnson use on the baby that you just don't normally see in your average movie?

Answer: Thermometer

The "ewwwww" factor in this was that it was a rectal thermometer. Why the director thought we really needed to see the mother use the thermometer on her child is completely beyond me. I have to assume this was another attempt at characterization, showing Betty going about her morning activities - hanging laundry and checking on her slightly-feverish child - up until she was killed by the monster. I think it was also supposed to make the last shot of the baby in the scene more poignant. I was more happy for the kid that his looney mom was out of the picture.

This is definitely one of the most uncomfortable movie moments I've ever experienced (and I've sat through "Eraserhead" about thirty times).
7. What was written on the side of the car that the monster flipped over on Lover's Lane?

Answer: 23 Skidoo

The Monster attacked the cars in Lover's Lane after eating all or most of the folks in the Community Dance Hall.
8. What kind of drink did Barney the deputy have when visiting Martin and Brett at their new home?

Answer: Bourbon and Seven

This scene was one of the few the director put in that actually showed a sense of characterization. Barney and Martin were old bachelor buddies and Barney was a third wheel now that his pal was married to Brett. A little more dialogue instead of narration would've helped, though.
9. What was Dr. Bradford's theory on why the monsters had come to Earth?

Answer: To find a weakness in the human species

Bradford said that the monsters were highly specialized test animals, and were actually mobile laboratories that consumed human beings to analyze them chemically. He believed that after both creatures were destroyed, the ship was transmitting the results back to their home world. Martin tried to destroy the transmitter, but failed.
10. What were Dr. Bradford's last words?

Answer: Only God knows for sure

His last words were in answer to Martin asking if the dying scientist thought that Mankind would be able to cope with the aliens when they next arrived.
Well, those are what the narrator tells us are Bradford's last words. Unfortunately, due to the legendary loss of the soundtrack, we'll never really know for sure.
