In the 1964 movie "Dr. Strangelove", Sellers did several roles, including that of Group Captain Lionel Mandrake of the British Royal Air Force.

The word todd means fox in old English. Figone means fox in Italian. In real life, Todd was at Normandy as a British captain whose unit was sent to Pegasus Bridge to reinforce the unit of Major John Howard. When the two units merged, Major Howard became the commanding officer of both. Captain Todd, as the second ranking officer present, became Howard's second in command. Together, they held the bridge until Lord Lovat, formerly of the Scots Guards, arrived and assumed complete command.

Therefore, it is ironic that Todd should portray Howard in a movie.

Chandler was also known as "Big Gray" because his hair began graying at age 18. He died prematurely at age 42 due to a botched routine surgical operation. General Merrill commanded the US Army 5307th Composite Unit which operated as a long range, deep penetration force of fighters behind Japanese lines in China, Burma, and India.

"The Desert Rats" was made in 1953 with Richard Burton in the lead role as Scottish Captain MacRoberts. His company of inexperienced Australians manage to hold out 242 days against the forces of the German Rommel. Mason was nominated for an Academy Award three times in his distinguished career.

Colonel Archie Gracie failed to graduate from West Point but did become a colonel in the New York state militia. His father was a Confederate brigadier general killed in battle at Petersburg, Virginia, in 1864. He was on the ship Titanic in 1912 when it struck an iceberg.

He heroically helped women and childen into lifeboats until there were no more boats. He then went down beneath the waves with the sinking ship. He miraculously resurfaced and survived the disaster. He wrote a well known book about this ordeal. Bernard Fox is a British actor from Wales who played Gracie with a British accent.

However, this is not accurate as Gracie was American. Also, in the film, Gracie interacts with "make believe" passengers who did not exist on the original ship.

Musketeers were guards for the French Royal family, thus soldiers of the King. The King was Commander-In-Chief of the French military. Frederick Fox is the son of the fine actor Edward Fox. In the film, Fox portrays King Louis as a reasonable young man who, on several occasions, supports his guards against his Prime Minister Cardinal Richelieu.

During the Revolutionary War, Francis Marion was a lieutenant colonel in the Continental Army and a brigadier general in the South Carolina militia. The British called him "The Swamp Fox" and reviled him as an immoral terrorist even as of today. Gibson's character in the film was very loosely based on the actual exploits of Marion.

Horrocks was a flamboyant military leader as is Fox as an actor. Fox won the Best Supporting Actor award from the British Academy Film Awards for his performance as Horrocks, which Edward calls his favorite part. Horrocks was one of the most successful British generals of the war and the "beau ideal of a corps commander". He commanded the British XXX Corps in Operation Market Garden.

In Spanish, zorro means fox. In the film "The Mask of Zorro", Hopkins plays an aged Zorro who has finally escaped from prison. He needs a newer and much younger man to take his place as Zorro. He locates a thief named Alejandro Murrieta and makes him his protege.

When killing a villain, the old Zorro is mortally wounded and gives his identity to the new Zorro. In the film "A Bridge Too Far", Hopkins brilliantly plays eccentric Lieutenant Colonel John "Jack" Frost, who is the only allied officer to achieve his final objective in Operation Market Garden.
