Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "In Sicily, women are more dangerous than shotguns."

Answer: "The Godfather", 1972

The movie "The Godfather" (1972) was based on Mario Puzo's novel of the same name, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, who co-wrote the screenplay with Mario Puzo. The film tells the story of the powerful crime family of Don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando) and the initiation of his son Michael (Al Pacino) into the family business. The film was a huge hit and is regarded as one of the best ever made. "The Godfather" was nominated for 11 awards at the 45th Academy Awards and won in three categories: Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Actor (declined award).

The phrase "in Sicily, women are more dangerous than shotguns" was said by Calò (Franco Citti) to Michael (Al Pacino) when he was sent to Sicily for safety. In Sicily, Michael met the beautiful Apollonia (Simonetta Stefanelli) and they seemed to be in love. But his friend Calò advised Michael not to approach her because Sicilian women are always under the guardianship of their father or husband, remembering that: "in Sicily, women are more dangerous than shotguns".
2. "My lady, the tide waits for no man, but I swear it would wait for you."

Answer: "Shakespeare in Love", 1998

"Shakespeare in Love" (1998), a romantic comedy film, was directed by John Madden and written by Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard. The film depicts a probable romance between Shakespeare (Joseph Fiennes) and Viola De Lesseps (Gwyneth Paltrow) while Shakespeare was writing "Romeo and Juliet". The film contains several facts that are not consistent with the time in which the story takes place, such as the absence of the title of Earl of Wessex and Shakespeare making no effort to create the story of "Romeo and Juliet" because he just adapted a play for the theater, translated from Italian. The film was a success with both the public and critics and won numerous awards including seven Oscars.

When the Earl of Wessex (Colin Firth) goes to pick up the aristocratic Viola De Lesseps, to whom he is engaged, to go to the theater where they will meet the queen and the lady-in-waiting says that Viola is not yet ready, he enters her room and says among other words, "My lady, the tide waits for no man, but I swear it would wait for you."
3. "Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer."

Answer: "The Godfather Part II", 1974

The films "The Godfather" and "The Godfather Part II" were directed by Francis Ford Coppola, who together with Mario Puzo was responsible for the screenplay. The films are based on Mario Puzo's series of novels of the same name. "The Godfather II" (1974) is the continuing saga of the Corleone crime family presented in the film "The Godfather" (1972). The film starred Al Pacino, Roberto Duvall, Robert De Niro, Diane Keaton and others. It tells the early years of Vito Corleone's life and the attempts of his son Michael Corleone in the 1950s to expand his control over the family crime business in America.

The quote was used by Michael who, talking to Frank Pentangeli, says that his father taught him many things, among them: "keep your friends close but your enemies closer". Many attribute the phrase to Sun Tzu and sometimes to Niccolò Machiavelli but without proof. There is an Italian saying that goes, "May God protect me from my friends. I protect myself from my enemies."
4. "I don't want to survive. I want to live."

Answer: "12 Years a Slave", 2013

"12 Years a Slave" (2013) is an American movie that tells the terrible situation of slaves in the Southern United States, in the period before the Civil War. The movie was based on the autobiography, dated 1853, of the free African-American Solomon Northup, where he tells of his life before slavery and his life and that of his companions on the sugar cane farms in Louisiana. The diary states that he was born free, was married with children and a good violinist. He was sent to Washington, D.C., with the promise of an excellent job, but was drugged and sent to New Orleans and sold as a slave, a situation he maintained for 12 years.

The film was directed by the director Steve McQueen and the screenplay was by John Ridley, starring Chiwetel Ejiofor (Solomon), Lupita Nyong'o (Patsey), Michael K. Williams (Robert), Chris Chalk (Clemens) and others. The film received numerous awards and nominations, including three Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay.

While Solomon Northup was on the boat with a group of blacks heading south to be sold, he discussed with his companions Robert and Clemens the possibility of starting a mutiny on the boat and the possibility of dying or surviving. On this occasion Northup says, "I don't want to survive, I want to live."
5. "Throughout human history, we have been dependent on machines to survive. Fate, it seems, is not without a sense of irony."

In the film, Thomas Anderson, also known as Neo, a computer programmer, is looking for a figure named Morpheus, who is claimed to understand the fundamental nature of reality. Neo encounters Morpheus who explains to him that the real world has been destroyed by a war between humans and machines and that Neo lives in an illusory world in a simulated reality called the Matrix. He also claims that Neo is the one who has the ability to destroy the Matrix and save humanity. In a dialogue between both Morpheus says to Neo, "Throughout human history, we have been dependent on machines to survive. Fate, it seems, is not without a sense of irony."
