At the premiere of 'Eleanor! The Eleanor Roosevelt Musical', we meet Dee Dee Allen and Barry Glickman as they sing a song about themselves and their "process". Although the first review indicates that the show might be a hit, when 'The New York Times' review is posted blasting both Dee Dee's and Barry's performance, the show is destined to close on opening night.

Ryan Murphy approached Meryl to see if she'd be interested and after going to see the stage show, she signed on, encouraged that her character didn't do a whole lot of dancing on stage. It wasn't until she arrived in Los Angeles for rehearsals that she discovered that the dancing requirement for her character had greatly increased!

'The Prom' also stars Oscar winners Nicole Kidman and Ariana DeBose.

Emma's desire to bring Alyssa to the school prom is the central storyline in this tale. This causes the Parent Teacher Association to cancel the prom altogether and the subsequent outrage brings the Broadway characters (Dee Dee, Barry, Angie, Trent, and Sheldon) to James Madison High School in protest. Emma is played by Jo Ellen Pellman and Alyssa is played by Ariana DeBose.

Upon being told that the State's Attorney wants the high school to hold an inclusive prom because that's what they feel best reflects America's values, the head of the school's PTA, Mrs. Greene, says, "Well, this isn't America, this is Indiana."

Trent, played by Andrew Rannells, initially promises Stephen Sondheim will write the group a song but after finding out that the acclaimed composer is not actually one of his fans, Trent writes one himself. He claims the song is quite rousing and in a humane key although Barry's assessment is that the song is "awful". Nevertheless, it's all they have so the group perform it during the half-time break of the local monster truck rally.

The crowd starts booing before Dee Dee even takes the stage for verse two.

Answer: An escape

Principal Hawkins, played by Keegan-Michael Key, says the two things he's most passionate about are Broadway musicals and secondary school administration which makes dating tricky. When Dee Dee says it's hard being a Broadway star and that sometimes she just wants to quit, Principal Hawkins quickly tells her that she can't do that and sings the song "We Look To You" to her to explain that her loves the theatre because it's how he escapes.

When Dee Dee asks if he means that theatre is a distraction to him, he replies by saying, "No, a distraction is momentary; an escape helps you heal."

Answer: She is the only student there.

The school's PTA arrange for a second, non-official prom to take place that night at another location and all of the students, including Emma's girlfriend, attend that prom instead. Neither Emma nor Principal Hawkins know about the unsanctioned prom in advance.

Using an anecdote about an understudy who was scared to take on the role of Roxie Hart in the Broadway musical 'Chicago' and director Bob Fosse's advice to the performer, Angie encourages Emma to speak out and tell her story. With a catchy song-and-dance number, Angie helps Emma to face her fears and stand tall against detractors by asking herself "What would Bob Fosse do?" The answer: "Give it some zazz".

Emma records a song called 'Unruly Heart' and posts it to YouTube. The song talks about how Emma was trying to change how she felt but kept on failing and it wasn't until she met her girlfriend that she began to embrace her unruly heart.

Using YouTube to reach a wide audience works, with Emma relaying to Barry that "the numbers just kept going up and then 'The Indiana Star' called, and then 'The Washington Post'!"

Mrs. Greene says that her daughter is more important than anything else in the world and that's why she's come to the prom.

Kaylee and Shelby (along with a number of other kids) realise they were being hypocritical in judging Emma after Trent demonstrates through song that loving thy neighbour is the most important thing of all.

Barry's parents didn't accept him when he came out to them many years ago but Dee Dee calls his mum and she shows up before the prom to apologise and admit she handled the situation all wrong. When Barry asks about his dad and whether he too had come, his mum says that she's sorry to say that he hadn't and that "he's not there yet".
