Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Dave Edmunds was a British guitarist and vocalist who loved nothing better than to play old time rock and roll. Where in the UK was he born?

Answer: Wales

Edmunds was born in the Welsh capital, Cardiff, on 15th April 1944. His first job was as a motor mechanic, but music was his real love and in his teens he began to play on the pub circuit of his native land.
2. During his career, the British rocker Dave Edmunds played with a wide range of musicians from Britain and the USA. He cut his teeth, musically, on the pub circuit. Which of these was the name of a trio he was frontman for?

Answer: The Raiders

Edmunds, on guitar and vocals, was joined by Bob 'Congo' Jones on drums and John David on bass. He had earlier played in the 99ers and Heartbeat, which also included his brother Geoff.
3. After a busy musical apprenticeship on the pubs and colleges circuit, Dave Edmunds tasted his first success in 1968 in a new group that was to have a top five UK hit. What was the band called?

Answer: Love Sculpture

Emerging from an earlier group, Love Sculpture comprised Edmunds, John David, Rob 'Congo' Jones, and later Mickey Gee and Terry Williams. Their instrumental version of "Sabre Dance", by Aram Khachaturian, allowed Edmunds to show off a guitarmanship that was to attract the admiration of many other rockers - including Bruce Springsteen. It reached number five in the UK in 1968.
4. The competition to have a Christmas Number One single was always keen in the UK. Which song gave Dave Edmunds that much-sought after spot in 1970?

Answer: I Hear You Knocking

"You went away and left me long time ago
But now you're knocking on my door
I hear you knocking, but you can't come in
I hear you knocking, go back where you been..."
Smiley Lewis had a Number Two US R&B charts hit with the song in 1955. Edmunds took it to the top of the UK charts and it reached the top five in Australia, Canada and the USA.
5. Dave Edmunds kicked off his solo career with a UK Number One single in 1970 and that made him a marketable commodity. He went on to star in an early 1970s musical film. What was it called?

Answer: Stardust

The 1974 movie was directed by Michael Apted and starred David Essex and and Adam Faith. It was a sequel to "That'll Be The Day" (1973) and was the story of a band's quest for musical fame and fortune. Edmunds played - naturally - a member of the group.
6. Producing music became as important as playing for the British rocker Dave Edmunds. He began to experiment with the wall of sound music style pioneered by a legendary American producer. Who was that?

Answer: Phil Spector

The wall of sound worked by layering several instruments of the same kind together. Spector made it his trade-mark and Edmunds enthusiastically used it on albums of his own, notably "Subtle As A Flying Mallet", which largely consisted of covers of 1950s and early 1960s rock standards.
7. What was a notable feature of the 1975 album "Subtle As A Flying Mallet" by the British rocker Dave Edmunds?

Answer: Edmunds played all of the instruments on many of the tracks

The album produced two top ten singles in the UK, "Baby, I Love You" (Number eight) and "Born to Be with You" (Number five). It was a homage to the 1950s era rock songs that Edmunds loved. Other tracks included "Da Doo Ron Ron", "I Ain't Never", "No Money Down" and "Let It Rock".
8. In 1979, six years after his last hit, Dave Edmunds returned to the UK top five with a song called "Girls Talk". Which post-punk songwriter wrote it?

Answer: Elvis Costello

"There are some things you can't cover up with lipstick and powder,
Thought I heard you mention my name can't you talk any louder..."
The song peaked at number 4. Edmunds worked regularly with Brinsley Schwarz and Nick Lowe and also recorded Graham Parker's "Back To Schooldays".
9. After playing as a solo artist throughout most of the early 1970s, in 1976 Dave Edmunds started a five-year stint with a new band. What was it called?

Answer: Rockpile

Rockpile was the name of the studio in Monmouth, Wales, where Edmunds recorded most of his solo albums. The founder members of Rockpile were Edmunds, Nick Lowe, Terry Williams and Billy Bremner. They recorded four albums, one as Rockpile ("Seconds of Pleasure"), two as Dave Edmunds Projects ("Tracks on Wax 4" and "Repeat When Necessary") and one as a Nick Lowe Project ("Labour of Lust").
The Stray Cats was the name of the band in the movie "Stardust", and also of a US band formed in 1980. Ironically, Dave Edmunds produced their debut album.
10. Dave Edmunds was one of the best lead guitarists of his generation and was admired by many others. Which legendary 'axeman' wrote a song called "From Small Things (Big Things One Day Come)" and gave it to Edmunds to record?

Answer: Bruce Springsteen

"At 16, she quit high school, to make her fortune in the Promised Land.
She got a job behind the counter at an all-night hamburger stand.
She wrote faithfully home to Mama, 'Now mama, don't you worry none.
From small things, Mama, big things one day come....'"
Springsteen also recorded the song. If you get a chance, look up both versions on the internet. I like 'The Boss', but I think he struggled vocally with this song, compared to the sheer joy and enthusiasm of the Edmunds version.
11. During a busy career of performing and producing music, the British rocker Dave Edmunds also provided the music for a big screen US teen-flick. Which of these (a sequel to the one with the famous shower scene) was it?

Answer: Porky's Revenge

This was the last of the three movies featuring the students of Angel Beach High School and was released in 1985. The shower scene referred to was in the first movie "Porky's", which was released in 1981.
12. In 1987, Dave Edmunds produced an album called "Angel With A Lariat" that broke a Canadian singer outside of her native land. Who was she?

Answer: k d lang

"Angel with a Lariat" was the second LP by k d lang. Recorded in London, it was the first to be released outside her native Canada. It reached Number 53 in the Billboard country charts.
13. Many artists have sought to work with the British rocker Dave Edmunds. Which of The Beatles did he tour with in 1992 and again in 2000?

Answer: Ringo Starr

Edmunds joined Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band for UK tours. He also toured with Jools Holland and Joe Brown. In 1986, Edmunds and Starr joined George Harrison, Eric Clapton and others in a US television special, "Carl Perkins's Rockabilly Session".
14. As well as being a performer, Dave Edmunds was in great demand as a record producer. Which 1960s duo, noted for their close harmonies and sweet sounding number one hits, woke up from a dream and turned to Edmunds to produce their 1984 comeback album?

Answer: The Everly Brothers

"EB '84" was Phil and Don's first studio album for 10 years. It featured "On the Wings of a Nightingale," presented to them by Paul McCartney. Edmunds and McCartney both played guitar on the album, which reached Number 44 in the US charts.
(I hope you picked up on the references to two of Phil and Don"s Number ones, "Wake Up Little Susie" and "All I Have to Do Is Dream".)
15. In 2008 and again in 2009, Dave Edmunds was a featured musician in the annual New Year's Eve TV hootenanny presented by a renowned keyboards player who had been a founder member of the band Squeeze. Who was he?

Answer: Jools Holland

In 2008, Edmunds sang "Girls Talk" and "I Hear You Knocking" and in 2009 he played the instrumental "Sabre Dance". Incidentally, many people who have heard "Sabre Dance" think that it was a speeded up performance. Not so, Edmunds played every note at the speed you hear it - and he nailed it first take in the recording studio.
The music shows presented by Jools Holland became regarded as the most influential on British TV, and he has no trouble in persuading stars of major international standing to to play along with his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra.
