Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where was the 1966 Eurovision Song Contest held?

Answer: Luxembourg

The contest was held in the Villa Louvigny, headquarters of the Luxembourg television company. This was the second time this venue had been used, the prior time being 1962. Villa Louvigny apparently had been the home of a wealthy Luxembourg family prior to its being turned into a corporate headquarters.
2. Which country won the 1966 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: Austria

Austria won with the song "Merci, Chérie" ("Thank You, Darling") sung by Udo Jergens. This was Udo's third time singing the Austria entry, the other times having placed sixth (1964) and fourth (1965).
3. The UK's 1966 entry was a song called "A Man Without Love". Who sang it?

Answer: Kenneth McKellar

Kenneth McKellar is a Scottish tenor, trained in opera. He later moved on to specialise in Scottish traditional music.
4. A new rule was instituted for the 1966 Eurovision Song Contest. Which rule was new this year?

Answer: a country's entry must be sung in its official language (or one of its official languages)

In 1966 a rule was instituted that Eurovision Song Contest entries must be sung in the offical language of the country, or one of the official languages where a country has multiple official languages. This probably stemmed from the realisation that pop music of the time was largely sung in English.

The desire to have a European 'pop' song was conflicting with the popular tendency to prefer ones in English, and potentially influencing the juries.
5. The current rules stated that each country had to sing in their own official language - but there are a number of countries with more than one official language. How many entries in the 1966 Eurovision Song Contest were sung entirely in French?

Answer: five

Five countries sang their 1966 entries in French. They were:

Belgium - "Un peu de poivre, un peu de sel" ("A Little Bit of Pepper, A Little Bit of Salt")
France - "Chez nous" ("With Us")
Luxembourg - "Ce soir je t'attendais" ("I Waited for You Tonight")
Monaco - "Bien plus fort" ("Much Stronger") and
Switzerland - "Ne vois-tu pas?" ("Don't You See?"
6. How many countries withdrew from the 1966 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: none

No countries withdrew from the 1966 competition. Neither did any countries debut or return after an absence.
7. A Eurovision Song Contest "first" regarding performers happened in 1966. What was it?

Answer: first black singer

Milly Scott was the first black singer to perform a country's entry song in the Eurovision Song Contest. She represented the Netherlands, singing a bouncy song called "Fernando en Filippo", accompanied by two guitarist wearing sombreros and serapes.
8. Who was the presenter at the 1966 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: Josiane Shen

Josiane Shen presented the 1966 Eurovision Song Contest. As there appears to be no information available on her through the internet, any biographical information provided would be most welcome!
9. There's always a halftime - what was the entertainment for the halftime of the 1966 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: Les Haricots Rouges

The French sextet "Les Haricots Rouges" provided the half-time entertainment. The group was founded by Pierre Jean and Gerard Tarquin in the early '60s.
10. Eighteen countries vied for the 1966 Eurovision Song crown. That there should have been a 1st position, 2nd position, 3rd etc, all the way to 18th, right? Wrong - or is it? How many countries, if any, tied for position?

Answer: nine

This year nine countries tied for four positions. Belgium and Ireland tied for fourth place, while Spain and Yugoslavia tied for seventh. Finland, Germany and Luxembourg were in a three-way tie for tenth position, and Italy and Monaco vied for the bottom of the heap, seventeenth place.
