Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which country hosted the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 after their artist, Loreen, won it the year before?

Answer: Sweden

Since 1958, it's traditional for a country whose act wins the Eurovision Song Contest to host the competition the following year and 2024 was no exception. Sweden's Loreen won in 2023 with her song "Tattoo" and the country and its broadcaster agreed to host the 2024 competition in the city of Malmo. It's the seventh time Sweden has hosted Eurovision and the third time it's been held in Malmo.

The United Kingdom hosted the 2023 edition on behalf of Ukraine (the winning country from 2022). Norway last hosted the competition in 2010.
2. The hosts for Eurovision 2024 were Swedish television presenter Petra Mede and which actress, who has appeared in TV shows like "Billions" and "Trophy Wife", and films like "Watchmen" and "The Proposal"?

Answer: Malin Akerman

Akerman was born in Sweden, spent most of her childhood in Canada, and now lives in the USA. When it was announced that she would cohost the show, Malin Akerman said that she was "very excited and a little nervous, but in a good way".

Akerman was in good hands though as 2024 was her co-host, Petra Mede's third time hosting Eurovision.
3. Which, of the following options, was NOT an artist participating in 2024's Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: Drawing with Crayon

Baby Lasagna represented Croatia with their catchy rock song "Rim Tim Tagi Dim".

Bambie Thug represented Ireland with a song titled "Doomsday Blue". The singer describes their style as "Ouija-pop" and brought along a scream coach to the show.

Windows95man represented Finland with a song titled "No Rules!" which starts with one of the singers hatching from a giant egg. At first glance, he appears to be naked from the waist down.
4. The artists representing Norway, Ukraine, and Serbia all incorporated which geological feature in their sets?

Answer: Boulder

One of Ukraine's singers climbed a enormous boulder during their act whereas Serbia's artist both started and finished their song sitting on a boulder. Norway's boulder was much smaller than either of the other acts but was prominent on the rotating platform their lead vocalist stood on.

Water didn't feature in any of this year's acts although Denmark's artist did incorporate sand into theirs (which is just as well since they sang a song titled "SAND").
5. Australia's entry for 2024, 'Electric Fields', included singing in one of the country's Aboriginal languages: Yankunytjatjara. Were they successful in reaching the grand final?

Answer: No

For only the second time since the country was invited to participate (2015), Australia's entry didn't feature in the grand final with 'Electric Fields' failing to progress from the first semi-final.

Not only did the song, titled "One Milkali (One Blood)", include lyrics in Yankunytjatjara, the act also incorporated the Aboriginal wind instrument, the didgeridoo.
6. Which country's act featured identical twins singing a song called "Unforgettable"?

Answer: Sweden

Although they are actually Norwegian, identical twins Marcus and Martinus won Sweden's 'Melodifestivalen' competition, giving them the opportunity to represent that country in Eurovision 2024. The 22 year olds sang a high-energy pop song titled "Unforgettable" and finished in the competition's top ten.
7. Other than the United Kingdom, which of the other 'Big 5' countries had a performance sung completely in English?

Answer: Germany

Even though the 'Big 5' countries (Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom) automatically qualify for the grand final, 2024 was the first year that these countries' artists performed during the semi-finals despite not being eligible for votes at this stage.

As such, viewers were able to hear Germany's entrant, Izaak, sing "Always on the Run" in English in both semi-final 1 and the grand final.
8. In the second semi-final's interval, which act from the 2023 contest made a surprise appearance during the parody musical number "We Just Love Eurovision Too Much"?

Answer: Kaarija (Finland)

While the votes from the second semi-final were being counted, host Petra Mede led a cast in singing a parody musical number called "We Just Love Eurovision Too Much". When referencing what the interval act would have looked like had Finland won in 2023, last year's runner-up Kaarija performed a portion of his wildly-popular song, "Cha Cha Cha".
9. Despite qualifying out of semi-final 2, which country's artist was disqualified before they could compete in the grand final?

Answer: Netherlands

Joost Klein represented the Netherlands in the second semi-final and easily qualified for the grand final - only Israel got more votes. After a member of the production staff laid a formal complaint with Swedish police against Klein however, organising body the European Broadcasting Union disqualified the Netherlands, meaning only 25 acts performed in the final instead of the 26 who qualified.

The Dutch jury's points were still awarded, but were read out by Eurovision's Executive Supervisor, Martin Osterdahl, rather than a representative from the country.
10. The artist from which country won the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 - the country's first win since 1988?

Answer: Switzerland

Switzerland's artist, Nemo, won the competition with a song titled "The Code" with lyrics that spoke to their journey in identifying as non-binary. This is the country's third Eurovision win and the first since Celine Dion won in 1988.

Croatia was the 2024 runner-up and it would have been their first win. Italy finished in seventh, with their last win coming in 2021. France finished fourth and their last win was even further back than Switzerland's - coming in 1977.
