The 1971 competition took place in the Gaiety Theatre in Dublin, Ireland. The Gaiety, built in 1871, is the venue often used for operas and musicals.

2. Which country won the 1971 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: Monaco

Monaco won with their entry "Un banc, un arbre, une rue" ("A Bench, A Tree, A Street"). This was the first win for Monaco, who won by twelve points. Interestingly, the song was written by French composers, conducted by a French conductor and sung in French by a French singer - who had never been to Monaco.

3. The UK's 1971 entry was a song called "Jack In The Box". Who sang it?

Answer: Clodagh Rodgers

Clodagh Rodgers was born in Ulster, Northern Ireland. She became a star in 1969 with her songs "Come Back and Shake Me" and "Goodnight Midnight".

In previous years, all Eurovision entries had to be sung either by a solo singer or a duet. This year that rule was dropped, allowing groups of up to six singers to perform an entry.

The scoring change caused some problems. Each country had two judges - one over the age of 25, one under, and each could give each song between one and five points. Needless to say, some juries awarded very few points, in hopes that it would keep other entries from getting more points than theirs.
