Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which city was the 2003 contest?

Answer: Riga

Latvia, having won the competition in Tallinn in 2002, had the honor of hosting the competition in the Latvian capital.
2. Who actually won the Eurovision competition in 2003?

Answer: Turkey

The winning entry was "Every Way That I Can" by Setab Erener which, which gained 167 points. Belgium was second (165), Russia third (164), and the UK last(0).
3. In what position did the Russian entry, Tatu, finish?

Answer: 3rd

Tatu were joint favourites at the start of the night and had been courting controversy and publicity in the build up to the competition. In the end, though, they were nudged into third place by Turkey and Belgium.
4. In which language was the Belgian entry sung?

Answer: None of these

French, Dutch (Flemish), and German are all spoken in Belgium; most entries tend to be sung at least in part in English. Belgium chose not to sing in any of these languages, though, and made up a language instead, which they called Sanomi. It proved surprisingly popular and was the leader for much of the voting.
5. Alf Poier represented which country?

Answer: Austria

This was perhaps the oddest song and performance of the night. Despite having been favourite before the competition began to finish last, it also proved surprisingly popular, gaining 101 votes and coming in 6th.
6. How many countries took part in Riga?

Answer: 26

Countries not taking part included Luxembourg, Finland, Denmark, Switzerland and Lithuania. Next year, instead of being relegated from the competition entirely, countries which score badly will take part in a qualifying competition prior to the main event.
7. The UK scored the infamous 'nul points', more often associated with poor Norway. This is only the second time in the history of the contest that this has happened.

Answer: False

In fact, this is the first time the UK has failed to garner a single point. The previous worst performance by the UK was coming in 18th in 2000. Many explanations have been given for this poor performance - mainly that the voting was politcal. Perhaps. Or perhaps it was because the British entry, Jemini, sang out of tune.
8. Which were the first and the last entries performed?

Answer: Iceland and Slovenia

The Icelandic entry was "Open Your Heart", sung by Birgitta, and the Slovenian entry was "Nanana", sung by Karmen Stavec.
9. Which country was taking part in the competition for the first time?

Answer: Ukraine

Their entry was "Hasta La Vista", performed by Oleksandr. Macedonia did not take part this year, although Bosnia did. To date, Belarus has never taken part.
10. The Contest hosts were Renars Kaupers and Marie ___.

Answer: N

Marija sang Latvia's winning entry in 2002, while Reynards was a member of the band which represented Latvia in 2000.
