Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which German city was the 1983 Eurovision Song Contest held?

Answer: Munich

The contest was held in the Rudi-Sedlmayer-Halle in Munich. This arena was originally built for the basketball events in the 1972 Olympics.
2. Which country won the 1983 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: Luxembourg

For the fifth time in the history of Eurovision, Luxembourg won. Their entry, "Si la vie est cadeau" ("If Life Was a Gift") won by a mere six points.
3. The UK's 1983 entry was a song called "I'm Never Giving Up". Who sang it?

Answer: Sweet Dreams

Carrie Gray, Helen Kray and Bobby McVay (no, I couldn't make up anything THAT improbable!) were Sweet Dreams. Their Eurovision entry was their only hit, reaching number 21 on the UK Singles Chart, as compiled by The Official UK Charts Company.
4. The 1983 Eurovision competition was broadcast live for the first time to a country outside Europe and the Middle East. Which country broadcast the competition live this year for the first time?

Answer: Australia

This year, Australia received the broadcast live. While it had not ever taken part in the competition, there was interest arising from the earlier entries by ABBA and Bucks Fizz.
5. The current rules stated that each country had to sing in their own official language - but there are a number of countries with more than one official language. How many entries in the 1983 Eurovision Song Contest were sung entirely in French?

Answer: two

This year, only two countries sang their entries in French. They were

France - "Vivre" ("Living") and
Luxembourg - "Si la vie est cadeau" ("If Life Was a Gift"), the winning entry
6. One country withdrew from the 1983 Eurovision Song Contest. Which country was this?

Answer: Ireland

Ireland did not take part this year. No reason has been recorded for their absence.
7. Italy returned to Eurovision after staying out for at least one year. For how many years had Italy been absent prior to this contest?

Answer: two

Italy returned to Eurovision after a two-year absence. Their entry, "Per Lucia" ("For Lucia"), sung by Riccardo Fogli, placed eleventh.
8. Who was the presenter at the 1983 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: Marlene Charell

Marlene Charell delivered her opening remarks, and announced all the scores, in three languages: German, French and English. This proved to be a bit difficult, however, and a number of mistakes in translation were made, including nearly assigning points to one country's entry which were meant for another.

The other names are all of German television presenters.
9. There's always a halftime - what was the entertainment for the halftime of the 1983 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: Marlene Charell and dance troupe

The event's presenter, Marlene Charell, led a troupe in a dance set to a medley of German songs.

Duck and Cover was a progressive rock group of the time, Heinz Schubert was a comic actor and Sepp Vielhuber & His Original Oktoberfest Brass Band was, surprisingly, a brass band.
10. Twenty countries vied for the 1983 Eurovision Song crown. That means there should have been a 1st position, 2nd position, 3rd etc, all the way to 20th, right? Wrong - or is it? How many countries, if any, tied for position?

Answer: six

Six countries tied for three places.

Norway and Austria tied for ninth position, Italy and Finland tied for eleventh position and Turkey and Spain tied for 19th place, with zero points each.
