Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There were a number of excellent versions of "Sunday Morning Coming Down". Who both wrote and recorded this song?

Answer: Kris Kristofferson

Most people remember Johnny Cash's version but it was in fact the first hit for Ray Stevens in 1969. Cash and Kristofferson released their versions in 1970.
2. Who sang "The Morning After"? It was a major hit in 1973 and the love theme to the movie "The Poseidon Adventure".

Answer: Maureen McGovern

Despite being a big hit and winning the Academy Award for the Best Original Song in 1972 there do not appear to be any other versions apart from the original film soundtrack by Maureen McGovern.
3. There were a number of artists who recorded "Chelsea Morning" but one of them was the author who wrote the song about the apartment in New York in which was home at the time. Who was this fine writer/singer?

Answer: Joni Mitchell

Joni Mitchell wrote and recorded this track for her 1969 album "Clouds" but Judy Collins had released a single version the same year. Collins also released the track on her album "Living" in 1971. Bill and Hillary Clinton named their daughter Chelsea after the song.
4. Although written as a hymn in the 1930s, the song "Morning has Broken" is generally identified with this artist who released it (initially as an album track) in 1971.

Answer: Cat Stevens

Cat Stevens recorded the track on his "Teaser and the Firecat" album in 1971. It reached number six on Billboard that year and has been covered by many artists and bands.
5. Who was the artist who released "Good Morning Starshine" as both a single in 1969 where it reached number 3 on Billboard and then as a track on an album of the same name - one of a number of great songs from the musical "Hair"?

Answer: Oliver

"Hair" contained some great music but the duo who wrote the tracks (Rado and Ragni) never quite managed to scale the same heights again. Oliver had one other hit later in 1969 when he released "Jean" from the movie "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie".
6. Two female artists had major hits with "Angel of the Morning" but who released the first version which made it to number seven on Billboard and earned the singer a Grammy nomination?

Answer: Merrilee Rush

Juice Newton's version actually performed better in 1981 but Merrilee Rush and the Turnabouts were the first to chart with their version in 1968 peaking at number seven.
7. From what musical would you hear "Oh What a Beautiful Mornin'"?

Answer: Oklahoma!

One of the many masterpieces from Rodgers and Hammerstein. It was the opening song in the musical and was sung by Curly McLain.
8. In 1980 who released the single "Morning Train"? It was a number one hit in the US but had a different title in the UK.

Answer: Sheena Easton

In the UK the song was released as "9 to 5" (which is part of the chorus) but the US release coincided with Dolly Parton's song of the same name written for the movie "9 to 5". To save confusion the US title was changed to "Morning Train". It still peaked at number one.
9. Who co-wrote recorded and released both an album and a single titled "September Morn"?

Answer: Neil Diamond

It was the title track from Neil's 1979 album. He wrote the song with French writer/artist Gilbert Becaud.
10. Inspired by seeing a friend catch a flight, in the rain, from LA International, who wrote and recorded "Early Morning Rain"?

Answer: Gordon Lightfoot

Peter, Paul and Mary released their version first (1965) but Lightfoot released it on his debut album in 1966. Elvis was believed to have liked the song very much and recorded it twice.
