Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Can you name the place associated with this well known Irish song? "In _______ fair city, where the girls are so pretty, I first set my eyes on sweet Molly Malone"

Answer: Dublin's

"Molly Malone" is surely one of the most instantly recognisable songs, at least among those with an interest in Ireland. Some say this song is based on a woman who did push a barrow of cockles and mussels around Ireland's capital; some doubt that. Whatever the truth, she is celebrated in statue form in Grafton Street.
2. Which Irish city is associated with this playground song? "She is handsome, she is pretty She is the belle of _______ city, She is courting, one two three Please won't you tell me who is she?"

Answer: Belfast

"I'll tell me ma when I get home
Someone got the answer wrong..."
A song often sung in school playgrounds, the origins are unsure, but it has been covered by many top artistes, including Van Morrison, The Dubliners and The Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem.
3. Can you name the place mentioned in this haunting Irish melody? "Low lie the fields of ________ Where once we watched the small free birds fly Our love was on the wing We had dreams and songs to sing It's so lonely 'round the fields of _______"

Answer: Athenry

Beautiful words, and can there be a more haunting melody than "The Fields Of Athenry"? The song tells the story of a man sentenced to be transported to Australia for stealing to support his family during the Great Famine. Just about any Irish singer worth his or her salt has sung this.

The song was written in 1979 by Pete St John, who was a native of Dublin. It was adopted by Ireland rugby supporters as a stirring song for international matches.
4. What is the name of the Irish mountains mentioned in this song? "Oh, Mary, this London's a wonderful sight, with people all working by day and by night. Sure they don't sow potatoes, nor barley, nor wheat, but there's gangs of them digging for gold in the street. At least when I asked them that's what I was told, so I just took a hand at this digging for gold, But for all that I found there I might as well be Where the Mountains of ________ sweep down to the sea."

Answer: Mourne

The lyrics of the "Mountains Of Mourne" were written by Percy French in 1896, and the melody is based on a tune by Thomas Moore. French was not born in Co Down, but in Co Roscommon, in 1854. He was an engineer by profession and also a prolific songwriter. This became a popular song for generations of singers across a variety of singing styles.
5. Which Irish town completes the lyric of this song of the sixties? "Way up in the north in old Tyrone, There's a pretty little girl I call my own. She's the sweetest rose Ireland's ever grown. And sure as the moon and stars above, I'm falling head over heels in love, With a pretty little girl from ________ In the county of Tyrone."

Answer: Omagh

Popularised during the great Irish Showband scene of the 1960s, this catchy song has been widely covered. Each year the town of Omagh hosts a pageant for young girls to find the 'Pretty Little Girl From Omagh'.
6. What is the name of the town mentioned in this traditional Irish ballad? "If I were King of Ireland's Isle and had all things at my will I'd roam for recreation and I'd seek for comfort still The comfort I would ask for, so that you may understand Is to win the heart of Martha, the Flower of Sweet _________"

Answer: Strabane

"The Flower Of Sweet Strabane" is a traditional song and if you've heard of it at all, you may have heard slightly different lyrics, though each verse always ends with the same line.
7. Which Irish place is this well-known song about? "She was lovely and fair as the rose of the summer Yet, 'twas not her beauty alone that won me Oh no! 'Twas the the truth in her eye ever beaming That made me love Mary, the Rose of ________."

Answer: Tralee

"The Rose Of Tralee" is a beautiful ballad. Written in the 19th century, it's still a popular song today. Nowadays a festival brings beautiful and talented young women of Irish extraction, or who claim it, to Tralee each year to compete for the 'Rose Of Tralee' title.
8. Can you name the Irish place that is mentioned in these lyrics? "I've just dropped in to see you all, I'll only stay awhile I want to hear how you're getting on, I want to hear you smile I'm happy to be back again And greet you big and small For there's no place on earth just like The homes of __________"

Answer: Donegal

It may seem like a very old and traditional song, but "The Homes of Donegal" is comparatively modern. It was written by Sean McBride - naturally a Co Donegal native -in the 1950s. One of the best recent versions was by Paul Brady, not a native of Donegal, but of neighbouring Tyrone.
9. What is the name of the Irish town referred to in these lyrics "Come back, Paddy Reilly to ________ Come home, Paddy Reilly, to me."

Answer: Ballyjamesduff

Yet another Percy French lyric, written in about 1912. "Come home, Paddy Reilly" featured in the 1949 movie 'The Blue Lagoon' about two young children stranded on a Pacific island. It was a remake of a 1923 film, and in 1980 Brooke Shields and Christopher Atkins starred in another remake.
Not many people know this, but Susan Stranks - later of British TV's 'Magpie' fame - starred in the 1949 movie. Ballyjamesduff is a town in Co Cavan.
10. It sounds like a piece of doggerel, but what Irish place is mentioned in this chorus from a song of the same name? "Davy Crockett's da was from ________ Davy Crockett's da was from ________"

Answer: Donemana

These are the only lines that I care to remember of this song. I'm making no claim that it is a FACT that Davy Crockett's father was from the Tyrone village of Donemana. The family certainly lived in Ireland. Some sources say Donegal and Cork, and the town of Castlederg - also in Co Tyrone - lays claim to a family link.
However, we all know a song about Davy Crockett, don't we? Altogether now..
"Born on a mountaintop in Tennessee....Davy, Davy Crockett - King of the Wild Frontier".
