Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Chinese
Answer: Walk the line like Egyptian
Only the schoolkids (who are "walking like an Egyptian" when the buzzer rings) and the Chinese (who specifically walk the line) are actually said to be walking like an Egyptian.
Sadly, the Chinese weren't listening to "Walk Like an Egyptian." Only the digital age has brought pop music to China.
2. Bazaar men by the Nile
Answer: Got the money on a bet
Yes, it's men from the bazaars, not bizarre men! Since there's actually no archeological evidence of bazaars in ancient Egypt, the bazaar men must be modern.
3. Old paintings on the tomb
Answer: Do the sand dance
The oldest tomb paintings in Egypt go back about 5,000 years. The elaborate hidden tombs in the Valley of the Kings were created around 3,500 years ago. So yes, the paintings on the tomb are indeed old. And if they move too quick, they're falling down like a domino!
4. Schoolkids
Answer: Like the punk and the metal bands
They're so sick of books. And when the buzzer rings, they're walking like an Egyptian.
Ancient Egyptian boys (from certain families) would have sat at desks and listened to teachers just like modern boys. The girls wouldn't go to school.
5. Cops
Answer: Sing and dance
The cops were the most active characters in "Walk Like an Egyptian." Not only do they hang out in the donut shop, they sing, dance, spin their clubs, cruise down the block, and say "Way-oh-way-oh."
The Old Kingdom of Egypt had no cops, just personal guards hired by people who could afford them.
6. Party boys
Answer: Call the Kremlin
"All the Japanese with their yen/The party boys call the Kremlin." This leaves me to wonder if the party boys are Japanese or if they're just the next batch of people swept up in the Egyptomania craze.
Egyptomania tends to run in phases. The ancient Greeks and Romans were, of course, contemporaries of the ancient Egyptians. There was a huge surge of interest in Egypt among westerners when Napoleon brought his army through from 1798 to 180s.
7. Blond waitresses
Answer: Spin around and cross the floor
The waitresses in "Walk Like an Egyptian" are almost as active as the cops. They take their trays, spin around, cross the floor, and bring you more when you drop your drink. They've also got the moves.
Ancient Egyptians would most likely have been drinking beer as their alcoholic beverage of choice.
8. Foreign types with the hookah pipes
Answer: Say "Way-oh-say-oh."
Hookahs (elaborate water pipes for smoking) were actually developed in India and spread into Persia before finally making their way into Egypt.
9. Gold crocodiles
Answer: Snap their teeth on your cigarette
Not only were the crocodiles snapping their teeth in ancient Egypt, scholar Michal Molcho found an ancient Egyptian crocodile cemetery so abundantly stocked with mummy crocs that he postulated they must have been bred for the purpose.
10. All the kids in the marketplace
Answer: Say "Way-oh-say-oh."
I'm assuming that these are the same kids that are sick of books and like the punk and the metal bands.
Ancient Egyptians credited the goddess Bat with the invention of music.
