Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who were the owner(s) of the Small Wonder shop and record label?

Answer: Pete and Mari Stennett

Pete and Mari had an excellant ear to spot quality in the jungle that was the late 1970s London music scene. They used the then-traditional method of discovering talents, issuing their first few releases, then signing them to major labels (and then came Factory Records in Manchester...).
2. The "Punk Poet" Patrik Fitzgerald started off his recording career after leaving a cassette at the door of Small Wonder. What is the name of his first EP and its classic title song?

Answer: Safety Pin Stuck In My Heart

"I just love you for that beat-beat-beat-beat-beating... I've got a safety pin stuck in my heart for you, for you".

Patrik has since tremendously evolved both as a musician and as a songwriter, but the "Punk Poet" label remains much thanks to this beautiful love song for Punk music.

3. Small Wonder Records has released Bauhaus' first 12" - the Goth classic "Bela Lugosi's Dead" (some argue it's the first ever Goth release). What colour is the vinyl of the original release, and is also the song lyrics' first word?

Answer: White

"White on white translucent black capes..."
All the others are colours of vinyl re-releases of this 12".

Released in September 1978, this piece spans on nearly 10 minutes of haunting sounds (on live performance it was sometimes stretched to nearly 20 minutes) and includes all the hallmarks of this exquisite band - Peter Murphy's deep vocals, Daniel Ash's crisp guitar and the solid rhythm section of David J and Kevin Haskins.
4. Which Small Wonder Records release has the following sticker attached to it? "8 TRACK EP Don't pay more than 99p. Reason for dum sticker, Track One Side two is not included because we could'nt fit it in."

Answer: Patrik Fitzgerald - The Paranoid Ward (7")

"Life at the top, can be hard, can be tough.
But I won't let this life, get me down"

The Paranoid Ward 7" EP was issued with this sticker. The omitted song was "Life At The Top". Next, the Paranoid Ward 12" EP was issued, including this great tune.
5. What was the address of the Small Wonder record shop?

Answer: 162 Hoe Street, Walthamstow, London E17

East17 fans should have pinned this one quite easily :-)
The Notting Hill address is of course the one of the original Rough Trade shop. The other two are branches of Reckless Records, one of my favourite London record shops.
6. Which of the following bands have NO releases issued by Small Wonder Records?

Answer: The Smiths

Poison Girls "Hex" 7", Angelic Upstarts "The Murder Of Liddle Towers" 7" and Fatal Microbes "Violence Grows" 7" are Small Wonder Records releases. The Smiths? You must've realized that's taken from another story (Rough Trade).
7. Crass, the acute and abrassive "anarcho-pacifists", have issued their first 12" in Small Wonder Records. Titled "The Feeding Of The Five Thousand", one song was omitted from it due to its "blasphemous content" and the refusal of the pressing plant to include it. Name its title.

Answer: Asylum

"Asylum" (later referred to as "Reality Asylum") was replaced by a 2-minute silence titled "The Sound Of Free Speech" on the Small Wonder Records release. In 1981, Crass have re-issued this 12" on their own label Crass Records, including this omitted track of course.
8. Which of the following was NOT used by Small Wonder Records as a catalogue identifier?

Answer: BITSY

I think that's an easy one after all. For example,
Bauhaus' "Bela Lugosi's Dead" is catalogued TEENY 2.
Crass' "The Feeding Of The Five Thousand" is catalogued WEENY 2.
Patrik Fitzgerald's "Safety Pin Stuck In My Heart" is catalogued SMALL 4.
9. The Cure has issued its first single, "Killing An Arab" in Small Wonder Records. Which song was on the B side?

Answer: 10.15 Saturday Night

"Kiling An Arab" is inspired by Albert Camus' "The Stranger", and has naturally stirred the necessary controversy...

Following the success of "Killing An Arab", The Cure went on to a long and successful recording career with the (then new) Fiction Records label, which also re-issued this single (as FICS 1).
10. According to Pete Stennet, which was the best-selling Small Wonder Records release?

Answer: "Feeding Of The Five Thousand" (Crass)

At least 30K copies were sold ("maybe even 50K").
"Killing An Arab" sold around 15K (the Fiction re-release sold more).
"Bela Lugosi's Dead" release was limited to 5K copies (the various Axis/4AD re-release sold more).
"Safety Pin Stuck In My Heart" sold around 10K.
