Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Dragged on a table in factory. Illegitimate place to be. In a packet in a lavatory. Die little baby screaming.' Lyrics from what song?

Answer: 'Bodies' - Sex Pistols

Not so much a cruel anti-abortion song as a paean to a mad fan - Pauline. Could be interpreted as shocking for the sake of it - or a firm stance against the hippies' free love ways. Johnny Rotten's Irish Catholic upbringing might have something to do with it as well - but don't tell him I said that.
2. 'Danger stranger. You better paint your face. No Elvis, Beatles, or the Rolling Stones. In ...' - When?

Answer: '1977' - the Clash

The Clash show the old garde the door. In 1977. The Stooges had tried to do the same in 1969. The Damned song is a cover of the Stooges. The Four Skins right-wing skinhead affiliations were a bit too strong to ignore- hence the fact they were boycotted into oblivion and their song about 'Big Brother'.
3. 'No crime if there ain't no law. No more cops left to mess you around. No more dreams of mystery chords. No more sight to bring you down.' What lovely song?

Answer: 'Neat Neat Neat' - the Damned

The Damned was the first punk band in a lot of ways. They were the first of the '77 UK generation to release a single, 'New Rose'. They were also the first to release a full length album, 'Damned Damned Damned', on April 16, 1977. They were however never taken seriously - which was of course the point. Why else would singer Dave Vanian dress up like a vampire, while guitarist Captain Sensible pranced around in a nurse's costume?
4. 'Whatever happened to Leon Trotsky? He got an ice pick. That made his ears burn.' A history lesson from whom?

Answer: 'No More Heroes' - the Stranglers

The Stranglers: old bastards that were lumped in with the punk movement because of their bad attitude. Great songwriters but not revolutionaries. More interested in strippers than in stripping away layers of the corporate oppressors' grip on our lives with biting manifestos indeed.
5. 'No sounds at first came out. This machine had dropped out. But it made music to itself. Made music for itself.' - What are they on about?

Answer: 'Rebellious Jukebox' - the Fall

Another scathing attack on the status quo-ah by the Fall. The Fall have survived for 26 years and numerous lineup changes now. Singer Mark E. Smith is said to have explained their stamina as follows: 'If it's me and yer gran on bongos, it's a Fall gig'.
6. 'Some people think little girls should be seen and not heard. But I think ...' - what is it they think?

Answer: 'Oh Bondage! Up Yours!' - X-Ray Spex

You downtrodders of righteous female indignation step aside. Here's X-Ray Spex with the truth. 'And if this punk rock abrasion doesn't work, I'll just join the Hare Krishnas', singer Polly Styrene thought to herself.
7. 'Junk floats on polluted water. An old custom to sell your daughter. Would you like number 23? Leave your yens on the counter please.' - Again, what song?

Answer: 'Hong Kong Garden' - Siouxsie and the Banshees

Siouxsie and the Banshees deny all responsibility for Goth.
8. 'Say what you like 'cause I don't care. I know where I am and going to. It's somewhere I won't preview. Don't have to explain myself to you.' Which song?

Answer: 'The Modern World' - the Jam

The Jam knew everything about the modern world. That's why they dressed up as Mods.
9. 'He's gotta degree in economics. Maths - physics and bionics. He thinks that I'm a cabbage. Cos I hate university challenge.' - who are they talking about?

Answer: 'My Perfect Cousin' - the Undertones

The Undertones' songwriter brothers O'Neill based this song on their real life cousin. They're still not on speaking terms because of it.
10. 'Bubblegum rock on plastic transistors. Schoolboy sedition backed by big time promoters. CBS promote the Clash. Ain't for revolution, it's just for cash.'

Answer: 'Punk Is Dead' - Crass
