Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. They were teen shredders from the UK, but they toured all over the US, teaching us how to rock again with releases like "Violent Nun", "Peruvian Vacation", and "Retard Picnic".

Answer: The Stupids

If I'd mentioned their album "Van Stupid", it would have been too easy.
2. What does GBH (as in, "City Baby Attacked by Rats") stand for?

Answer: Grievous Bodily Harm

The initials are UK police shorthand for a type of criminal charge against an assailant. Supposedly when they started there was another UK band called Grievous Bodily Harm, so for a while the big-haired boys added the word "Charged" to their name.
3. Complete the following MDC lyric: "My life in a cage/Show my outrage/I'm misunderstood/I did what I could/I made my try..."

Answer: I'm born to die!

From the song "Born to Die". How many punk rockers ever spray painted the opening lyrics to that song on a wall somewhere? "No War! No KKK! No Fascist USA!"
4. What does MDC NOT stand for?

Answer: Many Damn Conservatives

It also stood for Missle Destroyed Civilizations, Millions of Dead Children, Millions of Damn Christians, etc...
5. DRI recorded the song "Mad Man" for the LP "Dealing With It". Who's the Mad Man?

Answer: the singer's dad

They used to practice at the singer's house, whose dad hated them. That's so not fair.
6. What Black Sabbath song was covered by the Seattle band The Fartz on their album "World Full of Hate"?

Answer: Children of the Grave

So the semi-interesting tidbit here is that Guns-N-Roses bassist Duff McKagan played drums in the Fartz. He wasn't on this album though so who cares. Bleh.
7. What 80's pop hit did the Reno, NV band 7 Seconds cover on an EP they released in 1985?

Answer: 99 Red Balloons

These guys are still at it too! It makes me not feel so bad about being 34 and in a punk band.
8. Finish the following lyric from the above-mentioned EP: "If we can walk together, why can't we..."

Answer: ...rock together?"

A nice sentiment. Unity in the scene. But what was up with the football player eyepaint, Kev?
9. Complete the following phrase (and source of countless thousands of t-shirts, patches, and graffitti-covered spiky leather jackets) from a Crass lyric: "Jesus died for his own sins..."

Answer: ...not mine"

This band sparked off an international incident by anonymously releasing a tape purported to be a phone conversation between Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher during the time of the Falklands War. The State Department made fools of themselves claiming that "it looked like the work of the KGB" while really it was everyone's favorite anarcho-crusty punks, Crass!
10. Which one of these bands was NOT on the Repo Man soundtrack?

Answer: X

Though they were also from LA, X were not on this soundtrack. You pretty much had to have this record if you were a punk rocker in 1985.
11. This one should be pretty easy if you know anything about punk rock geography. Which one of these bands did NOT appear on the compilation "This is Boston, Not LA"?

Answer: Black Flag

Yo, I said Boston, NOT LA. I hope you didn't miss that one.
12. The guitarist for early DC harDCore band Marginal Man was the son of a US senator.

Answer: True

Kenny Inouye's dad was Daniel Inouye, the senator for the state of Hawaii. Maybe I should made a federal case out of it when I got my nose broken at their show in 1985.
13. How did the Minutemen's d. boon die?

Answer: van accident

For a lot of people there is no better punk band than the Minutemen. They were original, political, and intelligent, and no one wrote lyrics like d. boon. He would no doubt STILL be making good music--and if he had lived, maybe he could have prevented Henry Rollins from becoming such a tool.
14. What Angry Samoans song about self-mutilation did the Accused cover on their album "Martha Splatterhead's Maddest Stories Ever Told"?

Answer: Lights Out

Rick Spencer of the band Uwharria, himself a huge Accused fan, pointed out to me that my original info here was wrong. I wrote: "OK, so the Accused record came out in 1991, which you would THINK would disqualify it from being included in a 1980's punk quiz. Think again. The Samoans' song came out in 1982. So sue me." The album actually DID come out in 1988 and was re-released in 1991.
15. The Dead Kennedys' "We've Got a Bigger Problem Now" was a lounge-ified update of what previous DK's song?

Answer: California Uber Alles

Ronald Reagan was the subject of "We've Got a Bigger Problem Now", while "California Uber Alles" took on California governor Jerry Brown. About the Reaganized update, I'd say that the title was quite an understatement. Thanks for playing!
