King George III (1738-1820) was the great-great-great-grandfather of Queen Elizabeth II. He became King of Great Britain and Ireland in 1760 and is perhaps best remembered for two major events during his reign: the loss of the American colonies following the American Revolution and the long struggle against Napoleon's France.

His reign saw great advances in science and industry, but was marred by political instability and war. Towards the end of his reign he suffered from recurrent mental illness, now thought to have been caused by porphyria, which led to his son, the future George IV, acting as Prince Regent from 1811 until George III's death in 1820.

Victoria also established many of the traditions still associated with the British monarchy, including an emphasis on family life and a strict sense of morality.

She was married to Prince Albert and their children married into many of Europe's royal families, earning her the nickname "the grandmother of Europe". Despite her success as a symbol of stability, the long period of mourning following Albert's death affected her popularity for a time.

Although his reign was short, he is credited with improving Britain's foreign relations, particularly with France, laying the foundations for the alliance that helped during World War I. At home, he oversaw the beginning of social and political reforms. He was also a noted patron of the arts and fashion, giving rise to the term "Edwardian era", which is remembered for its elegance.
